itchitch 4,651 Posted March 8, 2018 Posted March 8, 2018 What effect does this method have on an amplifier's load? If the speakers that are connected to the amp are 8ohm does the amp still only see an 8ohm load?
wrf 5,217 Posted March 8, 2018 Posted March 8, 2018 Schematics for the TS EQ sub show a load of only 56K. Should be just fine. Likely the same for any other sub.
Chops 694 Posted March 8, 2018 Posted March 8, 2018 Yes, too high for the amp to even notice, but the benefit is that the sub would then have the "sound" of the amp feeding it.
zumbini 6,153 Posted March 9, 2018 Posted March 9, 2018 On the downside, the amp will be wasting power producing a full range output, and the noise level will be higher. I only use a speaker level signal as a last resort. IMHO you are better off twinning your pre outs to drive the sub.
itchitch 4,651 Posted March 9, 2018 Author Posted March 9, 2018 Dom, I have been looking at some local ads for used subs. One of them only had LFE and speaker level inputs. I had always been curious about this method of connection. Another had only speaker level connections but had a variable high pass feature. Thanks! (Dom autocorrects to DoN ?)
UncleMeat 1,174 Posted March 9, 2018 Posted March 9, 2018 (edited) Make sure you don't use a bridged-mono amp, or an inverting amp. On the my Sunfire subs the signal ground of the speaker level input is also an earth ground. The manual says not to; but who reads that first??!! Edited March 9, 2018 by UncleMeat
zumbini 6,153 Posted March 9, 2018 Posted March 9, 2018 I assumed from your original post that it was (would be) an active sub. Passive subs and sub/sat system are intended to be driven directly by an amp. The Design Acoustic DA-30's (a DA-20LF sub with 2 DA-10 satellites) I bought in the late 70's and now use in my shop are set up that way (full range speaker-level signal to the sub, barrier strip outputs to the satellites. They aren't earth-shakers but sound excellent at reasonable listening levels.
itchitch 4,651 Posted March 9, 2018 Author Posted March 9, 2018 (edited) I only used the Sunfire for illustration purposes. Dom... it was an active sub question. Thanks Edited March 9, 2018 by itchitch
