The Death of Dynavox? - Amazing Speakers Woofer Replacements

Dynavox, for years an intermittent source of replacement woofers for Amazing speakers appears to be gone.  It's been a while since they had the woofers in stock, but now the web site is gone.

RIP

I purchased my woofers there years ago (before Amazing surrounds were available?) when rebuilding my Amazings.

Ouch.. Is the cone material holding up well enough for adding new surrounds to the original drivers? Once I read that in some environments the cone material was having age issues. Hope it's not common.

I refoamed 6 woofers about a year ago.  Cone material was fine.  I bought the surrounds from Simply Speakers.  Beware.  Some surrounds fit poorly and turn refoaming into a nightmare.

Did the flat woofers in the Silvers have the foam issue or were those surrounds a longer lasting material?

The woofers are special and not likely replaceable with any other woofer. In this video Bob talks about tuning the magnet structure to blend the woofer with the response of the huge baffle.

SEA rebuilds the ribbons. Someone could rebuild woofers.

OK, light forensics..., does this make sense?

There's another company, OreVox..., and somewhere (elusive to pinpoint) Orevox and Dynavox joined?  Or is it that "Dynavox" was a brand, not a company, and the speaker just happened to have it's own website...  Some elusive posts on AK about it.

So, I went to the OREVOX website..., and on the home page, is a picture of the Dynavox driver, and it's even called "12" Carver Amazing Loudspeaker Paper Cone Woofer Driver"..., here's the link...

https://orevox.com/12inch-Carver-Amazing-Loudspeaker-Paper-Cone-Woofer-Driver

So, maybe it's just a simple website change?  And the drivers are still available?

BTW, there's some kind of supplement/pharmaceutical product called DynaVox, upper case "V", so maybe (speculating here) there was a conflict that lawyers figured out, causing the old website to go away...  I dunno - just am glad to see these still available, and and a good price.

Good to know the product exists.  But as on the old Dynavox page, they are out of stock.

Urban legend has it that Dynavox was having these drivers produced by the same Chinese manufacturer used by Carver.  They would order a batch, sell out and then order another.  Hence the erratic supply.  I haven't seen them in stock for several years.

Do we know the Thiele/Small parameters of the originals?  I noticed nothing is listed for the Orevox driver aside from referencing impedance, sensitivity, and Xmax. Kind of hard to know if any speaker would be an adequate replacement for another without that data.

I think its the WP-1220 or SW-1220FL for specs.

BTW, if anyone wants to, or does, because they need them, please let this thread know if they are in stock, or out of stock...

Someone on the sister Facebook group indicated that they were out of stock a couple years ago..., but they did tell him when they would be in stock, but then he bought the last of their stock..., so they may still be out of stock...

Thanks

Well, Orevox shows the SW-1220FL as the replacement for the original Carver Amazing woofer (618-00001-00) but no stock and a referenced 'new version' but dead hyperlinks. I think by reference they are referring to the AWP-1220FL (also showing OOS) - but the specs are substantially different as is the construction (honeycomb vs paper cone).

And I see the SW-1220FL specs but I was wondering if those, in fact, matched whatever the original was. It's an easy thing to say a driver is an 'exact replacement', but often it really isn't. I was just curious if anyone actually tested one of the originals (or found original paperwork).

The Amazings were a very interesting design that Bob Carver came up with.

I'm sure many have done the replacements.  However, the only person I personally know of that replaced drivers in a pair of Amazings, is @Ar9Jim, a few years ago..., IIRC.  Jim, do you have any more insight?
