Rob41 23 Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 I just finished the mods I wanted to make to my Cerwin Vega PD-3's and I'm loving the improvements. Last summer I had replaced the original woofers with higher quality woofers and replaced the under par falling apart damping material with new. Yesterday I replaced the small wiring going to the crossovers and from the crossovers with better quality 12g wiring. Then I added a pair of Dayton planar tweeters. I just left the original tweeters in place since that part of the cabinet is separate from the woofer part of the enclosure. All of the drivers besides the woofer are sealed anyway. I am so pleased with the results. They have handled everything my M1.0t MkII Opt2 can dish out several times now as one might expect from an upper end pair of CV's, but now they do it with a much more refined and controlled delivery. Prodigious power with a dose of audiophile refinement. It's actually very infrequently that I crank it up that much for most of my normal listening, and it's nice to know my gear isn't even breaking a sweat. The sound is so detailed and clear. Thanks again Rich for the great work on the Mk II. Between that amp and my reworked speakers I'm in heaven. 1

Rob41 23 Posted October 11, 2011 Author Posted October 11, 2011 Yeah, they are Dayton pro series woofers. I chose them because their high power handling, high spl and 4 ohm impedance. I did rework and add damping material so the sound from them isn't as colored. I ended up with a total impedance of 6 ohms on each cabinet.

Rob41 23 Posted October 12, 2011 Author Posted October 12, 2011 All I've noticed is the soundstage seems to be more encompassing. It's like the sound is coming less from the speakers and there is more of a sound stage. One thing to note though is my crummy listening space. The speakers are about 7' apart and are about 12' away from me. They are also against a wall and slightly under a ledge. Not optimal for sure. I do like them but a lot of others talk about the criticality of the crossover point for these.

PDR 1,194 Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 I`ll chime in with my .02 with the Dayton Planers. I have 16 of them in my small line array. They are a decent tweeter, I dont know if the chance of beaming increases or decreases in a line array, but I have heard no beaming from these. The highs seemed a bit veiled. not quite as clear as I would like, They dont image quite as well as others, but fine enough. For their price of about $75 they are a nice planer in my opinion. A better choice....for the arrays anyway...is the Fountek NeoCd2.0M, but at twice the price of the daytons its a $ consideration. These really shine, the airiness is very cool and the depth they throw is amazing. I have my big arrays hooked up to my MP401 for the last couple of days. These have 16 of the Founteks and I am just floored by how good they sound. I have found with any ribbon or planer that room treatments are a big plus. Before I treated my room I found both the arrays a bit fatiguing, now its almost nirvana.
