  1. http://www.alphatechstl.com/home.nxg I don't know how they sell the used stuff. The website doesn't mention it and doesn't do justice to what they are. Yes, they do repair, they do good work and have a great reputation. The other side of the coin is they are in an older building that is overflowing with old stuff, and you can just go in and stumble around (there's so much gear it's hard to walk), look, listen to whatever is hooked up. Last time they had a pair of Duetta Sigs. It really reminds me of a junkyard, except AFAIK it all works. I don't know how they sell it if you don't know about it and go in there. The owner, Zaw, brokered a private sale in which I bought my MG-IIIas. Good folks, cool place.
  2. What a great karma! Hope you have a lot of fun with this. Don't know about the Carvers, but x2 on the Nakamichis (your second post came while I was typing). There is a repair place/used eqpt dealer here that has a huge amount of stuff (almost an audio junkyard, some a little ugly but all in working condition) that has several, and I was tempted to buy one, but it's hard to justify with everything going digital. If you're going to copy the tapes, you might consider burning them to CD. Now that I'm thinking about it, this might be a good time for an Audio Archaelogical Expedition....

These aren't original, but I don't know where I heard them: Physics is your friend. Corollary: big hammers break things. My son heard them a lot when he was younger, esp. the corollary.

  5. Wish I'd been around for the start of this thread. I know what the OP means, By the Light of the Moon is slower, less of the rock'n'roll. I much prefer How Will the Wolf Survive, and a more recent album I really enjoy is this one: We saw Los Lobos again a few years ago when they were opening for Mellencamp, and wished they would have played longer. They started without too much energy, but by the second or third song of their short set were showing they still had it.
  6. Looks like I didn't resond on Planar Asylum, so-- Overall Speaker Performance 4.5 Overall Speaker Quality 4.5 Value For Money 5 (bought used, for a song; even new ones are a comparative bargain at their performance level) Reliability 4 (adhesive deteriorates; ribbons surprisingly robust) Factory Technical Support 5 Factory Service N/A Ease of Doing Business With Your Dealer 1 (closest dealer is 2 hrs away by car; more dealers than Pass, though!) Ease of Doing Business With the Manufacturer 4 (nice folks, only available by phone when I dealt w/ them) Distribution Network 2 Dealer Knowledge N/A Technical Innovation 4 Product Availability 2 (b/c no local dealer) Brand Currently Owned: Magnepan MG-IIIa Next Speaker Purchase: Magnepan MG20.x
  7. Sorry, not quite the effect I was aiming for!
  8. Thanks, all! I must admit I'm clueless on how to paste images--tried to post in "What are you listening to" and couldn't get the album image in. Can paste text but not images from the win clipboard. Even tried setting the profile for a different editor (do you have to log out and back in for that to take effect?). Typical learning curve, I guess. Maybe it will work this time:
  9. Hi. Great site! A little intro--system is (please don't laugh too hard): Technics SL-1650 w/ Denon DL-103A Yamaha CDC-697 CD changer Pio Elite VSX-92tsh as a front end and using its DAC for the CD Carver C-1 between the receiver and amp, for MC phono and as an interface to the amp (more on that in a later post) Carver M-4.0t Magnepan MG-IIIa mains Advent 1 center and surrounds (they're next to go) The M-4.0t is just installed today, replaces an M-1.5t. Pass XVR-1 is coming end of the week, going to biamp w/ the 4.0t on top. The 4.0t is much smoother than the 1.5t, but the 1.5t's bottom end is so quick that I miss it. Soon, though, the best of both worlds! I have another C-1 and another M-1.5t, have to figure out what to do with them now. I was going to biamp w/ both 1.5ts, but the 4.0t came up and, well.... Glad to be here, Dave
