The Sunfire Amplifier: All the Amplifier You Will Ever Need "...To my ears, the parameter choices of the Sunfire are highly consonant with music. In any case, such choices have relatively small musical impact. More to the point, the intrinsic behavior of the Sunfire, outside such more or less arbitrary and unimportant choices, is superior to virtually all others. You can spend more money. Depending on your personal preferences and your speaker system, you might find an amplifier that sounded better to you. But you can't buy an amplifier that is demonstrably better, and you will have a hard time finding one that is as demonstrably good. Moreover, to my ears, you will even have a hard time finding one that sounds better even in that evanescent realm of personal preferences based on parameter choices. The Sunfire certainly stands in my own personal top echelon. Given this situation and the price of the Sunfire, it seems fair to say that the Sunfire redefines the situation of audio amplification. As of now, we have a whole new ballgame... ...The Sunfire is one of the great triumphs of audio design and one of the greatest bargains in audio..." http://www.regonaudio.com/Sunfire.html

REFERENCE COMPONENTS POWER AMPLIFIERS UPDATED JUNE 2015 Sunfire 300X2 (Load Invariant) Power Amplifier This particular Sunfire model (and I assume the 600X2 "sister" version, which has twice the power) is an exceptional amplifier. In fact, I believe it is one of the most important and imaginative designs in the entire history of amplifiers. ..., it does have good (and better than expected) musical performance, plus two other important virtues, making it an unique component from my perspective. The details are important, and "the big picture" regarding amplifiers is also something that I feel must be discussed in this instance, because the Sunfire may be a highly useful and desirable component for many audiophiles. First the set-up I heard in my own system: I used two Sunfire stereo amplifiers (4 channels in total), with one stereo amplifier dedicated for each L/R channel. In effect, I had complete separation, as with mono amplifiers, using one channel of each Sunfire only for the monitor and the second channel only for the subwoofer. I used the "Lab Direct" RCA inputs and the "Voltage Source" speaker outputs... Performance The Sunfire doesn't have the typical problem of an obvious "transistor sound"... The Sunfire does have a somewhat more natural and full-bodied sound than average transistor amplifiers... So why do I feel the Sunfire amplifiers are so special? Simple, when considering its unique ratio of Quality, Power and Cost (QPC), I believe the Sunfire could be a great value, possibly unprecedented, particularly if it fits into an audiophile's priorities.... I was impressed enough with the Sunfire to create a new Reference Class just for it... I believe that the (original Load Invariant) Sunfire amplifiers, because of their unprecedented combination of above average performance and almost unlimited power capability, at reasonable prices, constituted a "breakthrough" of sorts. Unfortunately, this was generally unrecognized at the time by almost everyone in the audiophile community (including me). That's in the distant past now, and I realize that this belated review is a poor substitute for the injustice of their prior neglect (in which they are not alone), but it's all I can do at this time..." http://www.high-endaudio.com/RC-Amplifiers.html

WINDOWS 10 OS HAS NATIVE FLAC AND MKV SUPPORT "Crank The Music" "Audio lovers will be happy to hear the latest news about Windows 10: the operating system will support lossless audio on phones and tablets.... FLAC files would be available in future preview builds of the software for small devices... The reference to FLAC is the Free Lossless Audio Codec, a file format that retains audio quality but in a smaller size than the pure music stream. FLAC shrinks down an audio file, similar to a ZIP file, but unlike the MP3 format it stores the full, uncompressed audio data. You could, for example, take music files from a CD and reduced the file sizes with FLAC, without losing any sound quality. ...FLAC is one of the preferred file formats used for high-resolution audio files, which are typically much larger than an MP3 file....high-res digital copy of the song More Than a Feeling on Boston’s first album, for example, is 192MB in size. A comparably sounding FLAC version of it uses 60MB of storage. ...Google Android devices natively support FLAC audio files. https://gigaom.com/2015/01/29/crank-the-music-windows-10-phones-tablets-getting-flac-support/

MY OHM F'S ...purchased NEW IN 1974 when I was in the US Air Force cost $900 a pair... SOLD THEM in 1978 after I got out...$450...4x365= 1460 days....31 cents a day "...According to Ohm's President John Strohbeen, the early production Fs had "functionality issues." "They needed 300 watts to get going, and 301 to blow them up," Strohbeen said with a chuckle. Ohm couldn't repair them, so they replaced broken drivers under warranty. (until the warranty ran out) The engineers kept redesigning the driver to improve reliability, but it was the introduction of ferrofluid-cooled voice coils that cured the F's reliability woes..." http://www.cnet.com/news/forty-years-ago-the-ohm-f-speaker-was-a-game-changer-it-still-is/ BOUGHT NEW CARVER PLATINUM"S around 1988...around $2,200

Lincoln Walsh died a year before his radically innovative speaker technology made its commercial debut in the Ohm Acoustics F in 1972. The speaker featured an omnidirectional Walsh driver that projected a massive stereo soundstage. At the time of its introduction the $900 per pair Ohm F was hailed as one of the greatest speakers of all time by the international press. It sounded like nothing else, and the single 12-inch, truncated cone driver produced bass, midrange and treble frequencies (37Hz to 17kHz). The driver had a titanium top section, aluminum midband and paper bottom, with a single voice-coil at the top of the driver. Even today, bona-fide full-frequency drivers like that are rare. The Ohm drivers and cabinets were made in Brooklyn. According to Ohm's President John Strohbeen, the early production Fs had "functionality issues." "They needed 300 watts to get going, and 301 to blow them up," Strohbeen said with a chuckle. the F remained in production for 12 years, until 1984... the price had more than quadrupled to $3,995 per pair!.." Direct (Tower of Power album) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Direct is a 1981 live in-studio album by Tower of Power. It was their only album for the direct-to-disc record label Sheffield Lab. It also marked the return of original guitarist Willie James Fulton, not heard from since 1972's Bump City, and the last album to feature saxophonist Lenny Pickett. Mark Sanders plays drums on this album. .. It contained mostly songs from their previous albums but included new stuff as well. Direct would later be released with alternate takes on CD as Direct PLUS in 1997
