  1. Thanks for the info. All the info you gave me was on the 1.2 though which I don't understand because the original woofers in both were rated at 4 ohms. Why would a 8 ohm speaker be listed as a substitute? So far I am planning on going with the silver flute 4 ohm and this tweeter which Madisound cross referenced to the original as a suitable replacement according to another thread I read. That would only be 120 bucks. Or I am going to go with this Dayton kit and just replace everything I kind of like the idea of having new everything, I know at the time the crossovers were state of the art and still may be but certainly cross over technology has come a long way since then. Having fresh cross overs is kind of piece of mind, I mean I don't know if there is something wrong with them. I would hope someone just hooked them up to a bad source and just cooked the drivers but who knows. The cross overs look fine. Still trying to decide what to do. Thanks for the input though. The cabinets do seem fine though. Thoughts on the two directions anyone? Thanks https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/vifa-soft-dome-tweeters/vifa-d27tg35-06-1-dome-tweeter/ https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/silver-flute-woofers-6-7/silver-flute-w17rc38-04-ohm-6-1/2-wool-cone/ http://www.parts-express.com/br-1-kit-components--300-641
  2. Yeah I thought that was a bit of a joke, Should be $50 at the most for each. No more Thiel speakers for me.
  3. OK I got an e mail back from Thiel the tweeters are still available for the bargain price of 200 each plus shipping and the woofers are available for 225 each plus shipping. So &850 plus shipping for just the drivers for speakers that had a MSRP of 950. They would not give me any specs either. I kindly told them to get bent. I am on my own, I will probably just gut them out and just put a speaker kit in them.
  4. Those Peerless do have a healthy x-max. I have read really good reviews on both. I will have to wait until I get in touch with Thiel before I do anything.
  5. Thanks but no probably. I want to see what Thiel has to say but pretty sure it was a 4 ohm woofer. I will probably go with that Vifa and Silver Flute, I really like the idea of die cast frames and like the look better than the Peerless.
  6. I emailed Thiel to see if they can supply me with the specs on the drivers. I also found out that this tweeter http://www.parts-express.com/tymphany-d27tg35-06-1-silk-dome-tweeter--264-1022 is as close a match that there is. From all my research it seems they matched sensitivity from woofer to tweeter although the woofer was either 4 or 8 ohm and the tweeter was 6. I found these http://www.parts-express.com/peerless-sds-160f25pr01-08-6-1-2-paper-cone-woofer-speaker--264-1146 and could add a mills 4 ohm resistor if its too low right?
  7. I can find a bunch of info on the 1.2's but not much on the 1's like what kind of driver did they use, specs or anything. They changed everything from the 1's to the 1.2's the woofer x over and tweeter were all different and added more bracing which I don't understand how that will help, the front baffle is 1" thick already. I saw how they added more wood on the front and the grill is thicker, there is also a small wave guide built into the grill I have to consider. My overall goal is to have them sound the best they can for as little money as possible. If I could find the original drivers I would or some more with messed up cabinets and good drivers but they seldom if ever come up even on e-bay. I know the 1.2 are rated 4 ohms the woofer was 8 ohms 88 db and the tweeter was 6 ohms, crossed over at 2500. I suspect the 1's were about the same except they changed from a fabric dome to a metal dome. I was thinking about these for woofers but some people say they break up at around 2200 but someone has built some high end speakers using them and crossed them over at 5000. https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/silver-flute-woofers-6-7/silver-flute-w17rc38-08-6-1/2-wool-cone/ I don't know on 4 or 8 ohms for my application, here is the link to the high end speakers using them. http://www.magazine-audio.com/gemme-audio-vflex-technology/ pics
  8. I found some Thiel CS 1 cabinets all in all in pretty good shape at the thrift store for dirt cheap. I am kind of confused of where to go from here. Were they even that good to begin with? I have no testing equiptment or the knowledge to modify the stock cross overs to put aftermarket drivers in them, I mean I don't want to spend a lot of money to have them sound like crap in the end. One direction I am leaning towards is just buying this http://www.parts-express.com/br-1-kit-components--300-641 and just use the cabinets. Thoughts? any other suggestions? I have searched the internet and have not found much on the original drivers. Which if I could I could match as closely as I could to aftermarket. One thought on just doing the Dayton kit is that they will have all new drivers and cross overs. Again I am open for any suggestions but I am on a budget with these. Thanks in advance.
  9. Sony ES SS M7's and a good sub if you like your music low also I just got some of these and can highly recommend them with a sub as well. http://www.ebay.com/itm/381259319781?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT don't know how these sound but looks interesting http://www.ebay.com/itm/M-K-MILLER-AND-KREISEL-V-2B-SUBWOOFER-TWO-M-K-SATELLITE-2B-BOOKSHELF-SPEAKERS/141443655998?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D30545%26meid%3D1140604a23094b3d9069189f259fee83%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D5%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D381259319781&rt=nc Infinity QLS is another one that goes low like your SDA SRS 2 but dwarf the SRS 2's, Big rich full sound. The Sony ES SS M7's is why I got rid of those though. The M&K is big rich sound as well.
  10. Thanks, I have not tried these for HT, only music, and so far am simply stunned. Detailed, image like a mofo and simply disappear. The only minor gripe I have is that they are inefficient but that's just nit-picking. The only thing I wonder what to do if or when the time comes is what to do when the amp inside these die? Have it re-built? order a Dayton from PE? maybe just put a more powerful sub and amp? just plug the plate and run them with an external? I guess I will figure that out when the time comes. So far really impressed with the modest (compared to today's standards) 200 watt rms amp inside. I barely have these turned up 1/4 of the way and they're just about 30 years old! Sony makes some crap speakers but the ones I traded were not. I only did it because these were rare and I have three other sets of Sony speakers that I like more. another pic.
  11. Thanks, I guess M&K are not that well known or loved. Anyway these are proof positive that you don't need big huge speakers for rich full detailed sound. These are some of the best I have ever heard. I did try them with the Sunfire sub and they sounded fine as well.
  12. I have a friend who had these and wanted a set of my Sony speakers. these needed some work and one subwoofer I imagine still needs some work. Two blown tweeters that I found replacements (4 actually) and installed them. Then we decided to trade, I also included a amplifier as these are worth a bit more. The woofers have been replaced with those Mavin Audio, they came with the original and somebody tried to put rubber surrounds on them. I took them off and ordered new foam but imagine these ones will sound better, but will see. Cabinets and grills on speakers are in excellent condition the woofers are also in great condition with the exception of a few wire terminals broken, but use RCA's so don't care and one led is burned out. Also had to de-ox the volume pots and they work fine now. The bad news was the front baffle is only 3/4" thick with a 1/4" recess and it just particle board with T nuts on back. Somehow some moron broke the wood on three of the T-nut locations completely off. So I had to go in and cut two half circles and glue them behind the baffle and then fill the damaged areas with wood putty. I did one but still have to do the other one, I have not even looked but imagine its bad as well. Also the rear plate had no gasket so I put some on. Also these had just an insane amount of poly fill in them and it just seems like way to much, don't know if it was stock or not but I only put back about half. I also liquid nailed the inside of the cabinet corners. So far I am more than impressed that these nearly 30 year old speakers sound so damn good. When I re-foam the original I will a-b them, I also have to replace that LED. Enough rambling, PICS a before and after on the sub repair.
  13. I set them up in the main rig and found the matching center off of E-bay, so far I am really impressed.
  14. Well it happened again, A guy was selling some other Sony speakers so I went and picked them up. They are some Sony SS K90ED. Dual 6 1/2" woofers 6 1/2" woven Kevlar mid and 1" carbon dome ED tweeter. Cabinets are curved to break up waves. Bases are cast steel with spikes and nuts, also came with stainless steel isolation discs for hard wood floors. These are in excellent condition. Sound was not that impressive until I figured out how to set them up properly, they do not require as much toe in as my other speakers, actually hardly any in my rooms. Sound is sweet accurate detailed and they image like crazy. Sound stage is huge, a few times I have heard things from well outside the speakers. They have made me jump a few times as well. I have not listened to them very long but did have to hook the Sony ES SS M7's back to back and the M7's still win. I am trying to figure out how they stack up against the rest of my Sony collection and the rest as well. But still a really great speaker, the only thing I don;t care for is the vinyl wrap but you can't have everything right? I also found out an interesting bit of info, it seems B&W might have had a hand in developing these and a few other Sony speakers. It might explaining the similarities. I also built some stands and spikes for my other Sony SS X70ED speakers, it raised them up a bit and just made them more stable, overall sound was improved a small bit.
  15. I have enough for now LOL, just on the lookout to see what else is out there. I thought it was a good price too but unfortunately or more like fortunately already spent my allowance on a new amp. Seems like a great deal for somebody here. Eventually I will build another sealed and the Sunfire will go to the 2.1 room.
  16. I do have the 12"Architectural and got Bill to give it the Midas touch. Its just both the 10" Sunfire and 10" Earthquake came up locally and was wondering. I am not getting either of these and if in the future I want something I am just going to build it. Here is a link to both and he is selling both of these on e-bay as well 400 for a 10" and it says its been recently re-capped and has a receipt. http://www.tmraudio.com/products/subwoofers
  17. Pink Floyd, Atom Heart Mother.
  18. And you thought putting a plant on top of your speakers was bad
  19. I have heard just about all the Sunfire sub out there but I have never heard a Earthquake Supernova before. I did a quick search here and did not turn up much. Anyone have a chance to directly compare two in the same league? If so how do they compare? Not that either would work in my application because I only have one corner and its occupied by a fake fireplace and Christmas tree for a month out of the year but was just curious. Or any other like comparisons? anything like the Sunfire, compact same size passive as active. Thanks
  20. You should post pictures of those.
  21. Ah should have kept my 8.1's. If I ever get another pair of Infinities it will probably be something else. But if a deal comes up who knows.
  22. In this particular case the Sony did in 2001 and then the B&W in 2004 based on the research I did, but these Sony's have a similar look to the Matrix 804's and I have no idea when those came out. If Sony wanted to copy B&W why not just buy them out? Oh well.
  23. I know, I did a bunch of research trying to find out more info but did not really turn up anything. B&W and Sony did some work together in the past but don't know if it has any relevance here. I don't know why Sony would build a blatant rip off of B&W unless they were trying to piss them off. Sony can obviously make great speakers that don't copy anyone, maybe they were sending them a message? maybe coincidence? Who knows, great sounding nonetheless.
  24. Thanks, nah my 6.1 still suits my needs for HT. Yeah they are in really good shape for coming out of the late 80's early 90's, I got them home and cleaned them up, got the dust off and oiled the cabinets. Some things I forgot to mention last night, I drilled the bottoms and added nuts for spikes. Both of the bigger pair are made in the USA while the black ones were made in china to a higher standard and not even sold in the USA. The tops are cast aluminum though, heavy. They did make another version of it with two woofers that was taller. I do have the matching center and it has cast aluminum top as well you can see it in the above photo. I do have some stands that put them up about the same height as the others but does not seem to make a difference.
  25. I have sold a Bunch of gear lately and was not really looking and just being content with what I have for the time being and I came across some more rare vintage Sony speakers. They were pretty far away and kind of high for me so that was good. Then another pair of the same speakers came up closer and much cheaper, so I had to go take a look. Needless to say they came home with me. They are some SS-TL5, and they do sound fantastic, Detailed, nice deep sound stage, surprisingly deep bass for a 8" Real wood veneers, rubber surrounds. I would have to say these are a little brighter than the ES SS M7 but not harsh or fatiguing. If you can find a pair of any of these I highly recommend them. 8" rear firing woofer 6.5" mid woofer, 5" midrange and 1" titanium tweeter. SS-TL5, ES SS M7 and SS-X70 ED
