found some Vienna Acoustics Mozart Grand, opinions?
Ratamahatta replied to Ratamahatta's topic in Loudspeakers
I can certainly understand why he would not let me take them for a demo and I would not even ask, I don't lend out anything either. I will go tomorrow and give them a listen as best I can in the shop. If I like the way they sound I will probably throw them on lay away. If I get them and just don't like them I can probably get my money back out of them. Thanks for the info and heads up on the ARX A5's Certainly cant afford that right now but thanks anyway. -

Its been pretty bare around here for planar speakers lately, some Maggies but nothing I would really want. I sold the Carver AL3 plus because I could not get them to sound good in here with these low ceilings. They were fixing to close and did not have much in the way to hook them up to so I did not listen to them but will Monday. -
Like I need another set of speakers right now but a buddy of mine owns a pawn shop and I Went in today and they had a pair of near mint piano black Vienna Acoustics Mozart Grand speakers, they said they would do 500 out the door, I have read really good things about this company and these speakers, They retailed for about $2700 pair. any opinions or thoughts? Anyone own these or have heard them? Thanks In advance. Not actual speakers but look just like it.

No need for apologies, we are all passionate about audio here.

Well for what its worth it got slow at work and I got away and picked them up, I was able to go to $580. They were mint condition. I just got them home and cut down some stands to the height of the ones that Sony recommends about 1' tall. Holly $h!t! They sounded good in his house but it was small and no stands. They sound phenomenal! They sound better than my Infinity quantum like source I just sold. They don't dig as deep but hey I got a hell of a sub. With the exception of a few pairs of speakers I have always used a sub. These are a very neutral speaker nothing is overdone or bright, Vocals and instruments sound natural, it does not sound like I am listening to speakers interpretation of vocals or instruments but they are right there in front of me, Sound stage is huge, these speakers simply disappear and at the risk of sounding cliché I am hearing things in music that was muffled or nonexistent. Thanks for steering me in the right direction SNOW and daddyjt!

I am interested in these http://denver.craigslist.org/ele/4067345779.html I hear nothing but great reviews, and being compared to Wilson Watt puppy I am even more interested. the thing I dont know about is the asking price $650. I know they retailed for 1400 back in 94ish but just don't know if they are worth the price? thoughts? I know its all highly subjective and all but don't want to spend that if I cant even get half of it back when I sell them. Thanks!

I never owned a pair of the kappa 9's or regular 8 series but I have heard them both, I just owned the 8.1's. The 9's I heard were Bi amped with a pair of a McIntosh amps. They sounded great, the regular 8 series I almost bought and he was running them with a m1.5t and they sounded great as well be just to my ear just a little bit less bass. I didnt get them because he was asking too much and would not come down. But it did make me go get my M1.5t. Then latter on I came across the deal on my 8.1's. Latter runs of the 9's were easier on amps so I hear. these were mine, arg why did I sell these?

Nice I had a pair of those and still kick myself in the ass for getting rid of them, especially for the price I got them for. Yes they do take plenty of high current power, not as much as the Infinity's I have now but they still need a lot. The Kappa 9's were notorious for frying even the best amps because they would dip below 1 ohm load so unless you can find a really beefy and amp I would take them off your list, they dont really sound any better than the Kappa 8's anyways with a sub IMO.

Those look beastly, I bet they sound out of this world too. Did you have to give your first born child for them? lol

Back after audio hiatus with some Infinity Quantum line source

Well I got it in and it seems to work fine it powered right up out of the box, its funny how all my old Polk caps were not that far off. I will test it on whatever new caps I get. I will start a new thread in the speaker modification thread on the re-capping of these. -
yeah those bypass caps, gone.

Thanks, I had some LS90 but I did not do anything to them I am sure better quality caps would have make a difference. I have rebuilt a bunch of Polk speakers and it always made a difference. It didn't matter if I used Dayton caps Dayton resistors Mills resistors it always made a difference. Polk used some OK caps on the high side but better Caps have come out since then. I got the parts from Madisound and Parts connection. I also have used Parts express. I was going to do a complete rebuild and build new boards and everything and it may be a possibility in the future but for now I am happy with the results. As far as what you should do you will need to decide if the cost will be a worthy upgrade but there are many options available.

I recently got some of these and was really impressed with the sound but know these older Polk's benefit with a crossover upgrade. These have dual boards for the crossover, one for highs and one for lows. Polk used OK caps for the highs 25 years ago but certainly better caps these days. I have used Dayton in the past but with some advise I decided to use Clarity Cap ESA and Mundorf MOX resistors on the highs Clarity cap PX for the mid and Dayton for the SDA circuit. I barely got all the stuff on the high board and not a chance in hell of getting everything on the low board. I had to make a board and jumper them in. Sound was brighter as expected, I ditched the polyswitch but the caps needed to burn in but sounded better from the get go. They keep on sounding better and better and will go back on main duty when I rebuild the X-overs in the Infinitys. Before and after pics

Back after audio hiatus with some Infinity Quantum line source

I dont know what is going on I just had to accept some new e-bay user agreement, I wonder if that has something to do with it? Anyway all the prices from US sellers went up on that model, same price at amazon though. The one I got is probably the same on the inside. -

Back after audio hiatus with some Infinity Quantum line source

I was thinking either Dayton 1% for the mids and highs or Clarity cap PX. I am leaning more towards Clarity though. I have used Dayton caps in the past with good results but have to say I think Clarity caps are a notch higher, any thoughts? I want to get a meter because if I don't have to I would like not to replace the caps on the woofer, they are some huge electrolytic caps and people that have replaced them have complained of weak bass response afterwards. Not my photos. -

Yeah I don't need a multimeter I have several of those just a decent capacitance meter.
