My work was a little slow so I ducked out early and got home and all the boxes were sitting there by the door. I got started and got the woofers fr-foamed, one went really well and took literally about 5 mins, the other one I had a difficult time getting the VC centered where it would not rub, I have never had such a difficult time doing this. Finally got it not to rub and got them all back together minus the new top veneer, new tweeters and let the glue dry for a couple hours. I did some low level listening and am really impressed so far, I did have the same version of this but the 8.1's but sadly I sold them. It seems like they needed a bunch of space and at the time all I had powering anything was a AVR so I know I never got the full potential out of them. Anyway I am getting side tract again, so far these sound really good fast and revealing, when the glue dries and I can crank them a little I will give better impressions of these. Friday I should have the top veneer gluing on and trim them sat or sun. Anyway I have a question Gene or anyone that knows, I could not find a manual on these and don't know if setting the L-pads on the rear to neutral is straight up or all the way down? Thanks

Those turned out great Andrew, thanks for all the suggestions guys! I too was considering the just replace the top veneer route and found these http://www.ebay.com/itm/261616191378 perfect size. I ordered two of these and will attempt a re-veneer, I got out my belt sander with some 50 grit and sanded them down a little short of where I wanted to and then did the final adjustment with my orbital sander then got side tract........ OK I have gone as far as I can go until I get my supplies in. I touched up and cleaned the cabinets, took off the bottoms and added some t-nuts for spikes in the back and touched them up with some paint. Minwax golden oak seems to be a real good match, I got a touch up marker. The spot on the one I did a test area. Nothing to do but wait, I hate waiting. some pics.

I cant get those tweeters because they're sold, nah just kidding I got them they were saved in my watch list. Thanks for looking for me. I have done x-over rebuilds before but Infinity seems to put in decent caps to begin with. I might see if they're still in spec. I have painted a few pair of speakers and know what a PITA it can be. I thought of the hardwood idea or a piece of glass painted on back maybe plexiglass or just painting the top black but still kicking some ideas around.

Thanks that's what I thought even though I do like to upgrade. The ones I have are EMIT R series 2 some ones I was looking at are just EMIT R from an earlier series, they should work right? I was also contemplating putting some fresh caps in the x-overs as well thinking about Dayton audio 1% don't want to spend too much on Clarity caps or Sonics

I was not really looking to get any new speakers when low and behold I was driving and went by a garage sale in the area and they had a set of Infinity Kappa 6.1 out by the street. I pulled in to check them out. cabinets are OK except for someone putting plants on the top and totally messing up the veneer and MDF. I have a few ideas as for fixing the cabinets including just sanding them down and painting them gloss black. Missing one of the Emit R series 2 tweeters, and both woofers need re-foaming. The Polydome mid's are fine, needless to say I picked these up for 20 bucks. The re-foaming I can handle no problem but as for the tweeter there are a few on e=bay but I was thinking about getting these. http://www.parts-express.com/vifa-xt19td00-04-3-4-dual-radiator-tweeter--264-1000 they should be a drop in replacement same ohms and same sensitivity. I know the Emit r's sound good but were notorious for pooping. Any thoughts? nice to keep all original but nothing like upgrading with something better and more reliable right?

Well lady luck came with an unwanted visitor, Brother pain. shortly after posting this I started having back problems and have been out of it for two days now. Getting better now but still not out of the woods. Funny thing is I don't remember doing anything to provoke this.

Thanks, Pics of the other stuff.

local pawnshop finds, Klipsch Forte 2 upgraded. In excellent condition and sound fantastic previous owner upgraded x-overs with Sonic caps and titanium tweeter diaphragms. he also put grills over the rear passives. Totally different sound than I am used to but I like it. Kind of in your face sound and bright but not really fatiguing if set up right and you can hear everything the drummer is doing on the high hats and ride. The region has been free of any carver gear. here are some pics. I also found a Paradigm pw 2100 v2, some Acoustic Research powered partners at good will for 15 bucks, a NHT sub ten, and some NHT 2.5i.

kind of what I thought, one speaker to kind of do it all but nothing extremely well. I am going to pass for now anyway. Thanks

I picked up an older pair of Def Tecs BP-6 and the vinyl was coming off so I took it all the way off and then sanded and painted it with automotive paint gloss black, it looked just like the Piano gloss after about 4 coats primer lightly sanded then about 6 coats of black. Good luck and keep us posted.

After hours of critical listening and relentless comparison between the two I am ready to give my short reviews. The Sony are some of the most detailed and accurate speakers I have ever heard, They're quick and the dynamics are great. There are details I hear in music I simply have not heard before. On Alice in Chains Unplugged (one of my reference CD’s) I can hear some stray fret buzzing on the guitar, I have never heard it before and it comes through so clearly on these, I can even hear mumbling conversation between band members during intros to songs. And just about everything I listen to its the same thing, just minor details other speakers left out. Sound stage is huge and accurate, you can pinpoint every instrument on stage they simply disappear when you start listening. Mids and highs just simply shine, bass response is good, tight, punchy, it just does not go all the way to the bottom but hey that's what subs are for. The only minor drawback is when listening to these at high volume the mids can get a bit fatiguing on some passages, I have read some other reviews where the same thing was observed, even on the M9’s. I might try and see if there is a fix for this in the future but really not a big deal, their attention to detail and accuracy more than make up for it and I don't really listen that loudly anymore. The Viennas are also a great speaker that not much escapes getting reproduced with up most accuracy. These don't have the same details as the Sony but superb nonetheless. The sound stage is wide and full. These are just an easy to listen to speaker with no fatigue. These are also a very transparent speaker as well, they too also just disappear. Highs are shimmering mids are full and since I am a drummer the snare sound particularly excellent, Every ghost note and every subtle ride cymbal tap hi hat sizzle comes through accurately and completely just like they were right there. Vocals sound natural and come through clearly. bass response on these are great as well, surprising considering their size, tight, responsive, natural and a touch more substantial than the Sonys. As with the Sonys though, they sound better with a sub. The only drawback on these are that some albums are mildly laid back in the mids. I am guessing that's why they made the ES line as I hear they addressed this issue. It does not really bother me and they sound fantastic. Both of these are excellent speakers and I enjoy listening to both immensely. Both are fussy about set up but not really too bad. In the end I have to give it to the Sonys just for details I don't hear on the Viennas, and that's about it, they are different but both have their own unique magic and I can highly recommend either to any serious music fanatics.

Yeah I did play with that some and did put them further out, I did find optimum toe in but the Sonys are back now, I am sure they will come back sometime soon. -

Initial impressions are very good, Smooth, accurate, great sound stage, definitely the best $500 speakers I have ever got, but not the best $580 speakers. Yeah the Sony sound better, not by a huge margin, but yeah they do. There are a few albums that sound phenomenal on the Viennas but some are laid back slightly. They supposedly upgraded all that with the SE edition version. But I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for great sound. -

OK well after thinking about it I decided just to get them, I didn't want to risk them getting messed up on lay-away. Initial impression, WOW! Very natural and "precise" sounding. I can see what you mean about that. Huge sound stage, Just impressed all the way around. The grills are meant to be on when playing and it makes a difference. Everything comes across well, Corey Taylor's vocals on Bother played directly to my soul. Amy Lee's vocals had the same result and sounded well balanced. Yanni sounded like his piano was in my living room, all the string instruments were well rounded, and percussion was well defined, you get the picture. Bass response is on par with the Sony, pretty good but better with a sub. So far I am ecstatic with both finds. Which one sounds better, I will grind that axe for a long time but it will be fun! These pics are actual.
