HappyTrails 498 Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 http://asheville.craigslist.org/ele/4583213854.html Anyone know anything about these? I remember reading about Mag's but honestly know nothing about nor ever heard a pair. They are close and the price seems reasonable but in need of rebuilding. Paul
kve777 6,906 Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 They need big room, big power and subs. They also need servicing. READ But they do sound great when all is well. 1
Bean 384 Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Rebuilding from what I understand is very tedious but doable. I know someone that had a set of these and was totally in love with them. For the price they are good, if you really wanted, I believe Magnepan may still rebuild these, however the price will be more than buying a set of MMG's new from what I remember..... Like stated, need lots of power, lots of room, and IMHO a sub or two for that thump in the chest.
HappyTrails 498 Posted July 24, 2014 Author Posted July 24, 2014 Thanks! Even at the price, not sure if its worth my effort as a "project" I saw the price that thought that was rather low even with the need to rebuild. I knew someone here could shed some light on them
dcl 3,297 Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 You might contact SteveFord regarding Maggies. I recall his very nice setup in Featured Systems.
PMAT 2,061 Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 I believe Magnepan has a 30 day in-home trial. Get some new 1.7s and happiness will be yours. If not send them back. They are not expensive. Knowledgeable people rave about them. OR! Get some AL IIIs and be able to rock out.
slbenz 110 Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 The SMGa specs at the treble the same as the current MMGWs which sell new for $325 but you can find used for around $200. I have a set of MMGWs and the highs don't sound that airy compared to a set of MMGs or certainly to my 3 series Magnepans with the true ribbon tweeters. It is correct that you will be spending a few hours and like me, over the course of a couple of days to do the rebuild kit. You are probably better off depending on your room size to pick up a pair of MMGs on the used market. I have seen like new ones in my area run from $300-$400. Since they are much newer, there is less chance of delamination and they use a quasi-ribbon to extend the highs and give additional air and presence that the SMGas can't match.
