Greg Viggiano 89 Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 I just got a pair of Infinity 7 Kappa speakers. They seem like they require a lot of power. My C-1 is paired with a TFM-15CB (100 watts). With the volume knob almost all the way up, the output volume level is relatively low. Is 100 watts too low for these speakers?
Belvedere2 232 Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 Something doesn't sound right. I would think that they should at least get loud but would clip and get distorted. Infinity's require good current but Kappa 7s are not amp killers like 9s are. My Infinities get loud but are very clean. Don't seem loud at all until I walk out of the room. Then I notice how loud they are and go turn them down. If anything I'd say its the preamp. I know Dennis adjusted it when I had the mods done. Gain issue? 1
loner_t 2,568 Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 After BillD, Main 1 and Main 2 may have different gains. Can you swap Main 1 and Main 2 and test? 1
Greg Viggiano 89 Posted November 8, 2016 Author Posted November 8, 2016 I swapped the speakers - same problem. I guess it's the TFM-15CB. Time to get a pair of M-1.5s While I'm on the subject of Infinity Kappas, does anyone know who can restore the Polydome mid range drivers with the same type of dome material?
wrf 4,927 Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 After BillD, Main 1 and Main 2 may have different gains. Can you swap Main 1 and Main 2 and test? Just a note, but a properly done BillD mod slightly alters the gain on BOTH outputs. A C1 cranked full throttle (BillD or not) will likely drive any amp into distortion. 2
Greg Viggiano 89 Posted November 8, 2016 Author Posted November 8, 2016 Can you tell me which Carver site admin can help me with removing the limits on my email account. Apparently my box is full and no one can send me private messages. Thanks!
wrf 4,927 Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 Sorry. Limits are fixed. You gotta delete both sent and received messages to free up space. 1

Greg Viggiano 89 Posted November 14, 2016 Author Posted November 14, 2016 Thank you to Loner T for coming to Alexandria Virginia yesterday with loaner gear to troubleshoot the problem. After swapping a couple of amps / pre amps / speakers / and source units - the culprit was found to be the Nakamichi cassette deck's low output! Everything sounds wonderful again - especially the two C-1s modded by Dennis Miller! 4
zumbini 6,147 Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 Glad that you and LT got it worked out Greg. ENJOY THE MUSIC!
Greg Viggiano 89 Posted November 14, 2016 Author Posted November 14, 2016 Me and LT were talking about a roadtrip to see you. Dennis may be in Virginia around the holidays. If he travels down this way, we can have a little party at my place. 1

As for meeting in the DC area, let me know the date and I'll try to work it out.
kve777 6,885 Posted November 15, 2016 Posted November 15, 2016 Greg, can you post pics of your Poly Domes?
Rockster2U 668 Posted November 15, 2016 Posted November 15, 2016 Sometimes, the most obvious (in retrospect) culprit is the most often overlooked. Pretty simple issue but damn, it took quite awhile to come out of hiding. That poly-dome is made with a light colored white/khaki material and I don't think it's available any more. I know I researched this a couple of years ago when I bought my Infinity 7 Kappa's. Note : these are the older speakers which preceded The Kappa 7's. There is a pretty good replacement speaker available but it is dark in color. My compliments to LT. It would be great if all of you guys could get together. In the meantime, enjoy the new found decibels. 1
morris 390 Posted November 15, 2016 Posted November 15, 2016 There are some speaker repair services that repair polydomes. Millersound does a very nice professional looking repair. I've seen positive reviews. Magicmarksy is an Infinity repair guru on eBay. He replaces the center of the polydome with a dustcap looking material. I think kev777 has done some this way. Here's Kevin's repair on his Kapp 9's.
