RichP714 3,163 Posted May 11, 2020 Author Posted May 11, 2020 Gravity's Angel (Laurie Anderson and Peter Gabriel) some bottomless bass in this one 1
compwaco 1,129 Posted May 11, 2020 Posted May 11, 2020 Many years ago we used the Sheffield Drum Record as a percussion demo. It was very impressive. 1
Daddyjt 9,648 Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 The YouTube video doesn’t really do it justice, but “Fractals” off Fresh Aire 8 has some pretty intense percussion... 2
Receiver2000 4,141 Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 That's a pretty trippy video. I can imagine Fractuals really lighting up the speakers!!! The Sunday Morning Coffee album is another one that is a bit more relaxing but with interesting dynamic passages.
Daddyjt 9,648 Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 Mannheim Steamroller’s “Fresh Aire” Series was some of the first music I listened to when I got serious about music in the late 80’s. IIRC, there was only I-IV back then. 8 is by far the boldest of the Fresh Aire albums - the bass on “Big Bang” literally made my Velodyne DD12 “walk” about 10” when my system was on bare concrete in the basement prior to finishing... 1 1
BrianD 507 Posted May 14, 2020 Posted May 14, 2020 (edited) I’ll give a shout out for Billy Cobham - Spectrum Edited May 14, 2020 by BrianD 2
Receiver2000 4,141 Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 Hey Rich - I used to have that one and listened to it when I first got my Carver in '86!!! Brings back great memories. I really need to pick that one up again. Thank you. 1
RichP714 3,163 Posted May 16, 2020 Author Posted May 16, 2020 Not to harp on Shadowfax (although I don't think any of them played the Harp), but check out the tasty syncopation and stick attack on this one Shadowfax - 01 The Firewalker 1
Receiver2000 4,141 Posted May 16, 2020 Posted May 16, 2020 Rich- That was a tasty tune. Thanks. It rocks a little more than I remember the other Shadowfax work. I ordered a NM Dreams of Children LP from an ebay guy whose NM really means NM. Since I heard your Other Country post I can't wait- it will take me back.

In the Vinyl days, they were very well known for putting out work that had a dynaqmic range below the noise floor. Their CD tracks are recorded the way they should be (no loudness wars with compression). Here's a screenshot of the trqack above; you can see that the average level is much lower than most modern recordings; that's so as not to end up clipping the dynamic peaks. Most of their discography makes great use of extended dynamics, and it's very satisfying to hear properly recorded music.
Receiver2000 4,141 Posted May 16, 2020 Posted May 16, 2020 Thank you. I remember most all of the Windham Hill recordings being superb. Cant wait to get it. Might need to get the CD as well.
