I'm just beginning research on the purchase of headphones.  $ is no object - haha yes it is I don't want to spend more than $200.00 on my initial purchase.  What do you gentlemen use and what are the pros/cons for what is available?  Is there a preferred type of headphone driver and if so what is it?  Is there a place one can still audition these?  Other than the cord, what do I lose if I go wireless?

Edit: Has anyone every seen or heard these? http://listen.dts.com/headphone-x

Thanks for your input and knowledge ...

What are you plugging these headphones into? If they are for general purpose I also have a pair of and would recommend these. Also have the Beyerdynamic DT660 32 ohm, DT880 600 ohm and Sony MDR-150. Here's a post Steve started last year 50 Headphones Compared and if your interested a thread I started last year as well Headphone Tube Amp.

I was going to use just my C-1 or C-11 pre's headphone jack.  Should I be thinking along different lines?

No, not if your budget is $200.00. I edited thread above with some links and info you can do some reading on. Let me know if you have any questions about the headphones I use.

I honestly don't have much experience with any hifi headphones, or the fancy big bulky things.......I have had a set of the ORIGINAL (1st version) Bose in-ear headphones and they are absolutely PHENOMENAL!!!! The bass on them is amazing for an in-ear, and they are SUPER clean and clear! A buddy of mine has a high end version of the Shure in-ear headphones......not sure what model but the cords actually detach from the earbud itself, and he SWEARS by them! He's had the Bose in-ears before and says the Shure's just DOMINATE them......he does tile work and said that he listens to them when he's cutting tile and he can't even HEAR the tile saw!!! Anyways, not sure if this is something that would fit the bill for you, but my $0.02 anyways.......good luck finding something that works for you!!!

I neglected to mention in my initial post - I'm looking for over-ear styling not earbuds.

I own a set of Beyer DT-770's 32 ohm's and for just about any type of normal listening they ROCK.

That said, they are not the most "accurate" headphone out there.  They excel in enviorments where you don't want others to share your music, just listening while doing other things, or overall long usage.

I have had them on for 10 hours straight and my ears didnt hurt or ring, nor did they sweat at all.  I wear glasses so it was important they didnt make my head feel like its going to explode, and they dont.

Overall they are VERY comfortable and I know as a fact that a lot of broadcasters use them (like the guys that do radio announcing for sports games).

Again not the most accurate, but for sure just about the most comfortable out there.  If you want accurate, look at the Grado's Gene linked you too.  I put my ears on some  RS2's once and they just sounded PHENOMENAL!

There are many decent headphone amps out there though.  I have run through the Meridian Explorer, Audio GD NFB-5, Objective 2, and all of those are under 200 bucks with the Objective 2 being VERY low cost.

Now tube headphone amps..... yeah your gonna pay there, but you better do it to get a good unit.

A great place to read up on headphones and amps is headfi.org.  Also read reviews at InnerFidelity.com (Stereophiles headphone website)

I just bought AKG701's ($200 mint used) and a JDS Labs O2 headphone amp ($100 mint used) I am incredibly impressed, it's like strapping on a $20k pair of speakers. The transparency, dynamics, and detail are astounding for the money. Some really great write-ups on the net about the amp from the designer.
