Based on the schematic, 12AX7s V4 and V5 are the MM phono preamp stage and must be high gain, low noise/low microphonic examples. I found this out after substituting 5751s (ruggedized military equivalent to 12AX7, except having a lower gain) and they didn't work. 6922 (6DJ8) V6 is the subsonic filter. V1, V2, and V3 are the MC phono preamp stage. I recently replaced all the tubes in my unit (both main and phono) after replacing all the electrolytic capacitors and phono feedthrough capacitors. Sounds great!
