Trading TFM 75 for PT2400.
jjptkd replied to Reel Bond's topic in The Welcome Shop (Please read first)
Yeah, the TFM-75 is in my top 3 solid state amps ever made by Carver along with the 625x2 and Lightstar. The 625x2 and 75 were very similar to my ears either one could be a "destination" amplifier. As far as rarity the 625x2 or "600 two" is by far the least common from what I've seen, I've actually seen more Lightstars for sale than 600 two's, and probably 5 times as many 75's as either of those. I was tempted by that refurb'd 75 listed here awhile back he is fairly close to me (within 500 miles?) and I believe the last listed asking price was $3400 and a willingness to drive it up to the Seattle area. That is an excellent deal in my opinion with all the work that was done to it, just hard for me to justify when my Carver 275 has enough power to drive my Klipsch speakers and I have a pair of Crimson 350's sitting here. -
Trading TFM 75 for PT2400.

Wow- not sure what sites you follow but can't say that I've ever seen a 75 sell for more than $3500. Most that I've seen sell for around $1800-$2200 and I've bought probably 5 or 6 over the years around the $1200 mark. -

Some variables here like do you need the money and how good of a friend is he? Are you trading both 75's for a single 2400? The 75's in factory good condition are worth roughly $2k each and a beat up 2400 is probably worth, lets be generous at $500. So a "fair" deal would be $3500 cash plus the 2400 for both 75's. Now in the past what I've done for friends is offer them a great deal either at my cost or sometimes well below cost with the condition that if they ever decide to sell or trade up I get first chance at the item at our original deal price. Hope this helps and as others have stated I'd try and keep the 75's or at least one of them. -
That's about roughly when I started having trouble with mine, around 300 hours or so. It started with a loud "PoP" shortly after power up, I was in the other room and heard it quite loudly through the speaker(s.) Amp still sounding fine so shrugged it off. A couple days later noticed the meter was only reading 20ma or so and when I tried to re-adjust the bias it would max out at around 55ma? It's a little funny, I've seen you mention before that you had the "review" amplifier- I wonder which one of us actually got that amp as I supposedly bought that amp too. I don't really care if I'm being honest I just jumped after it because of the $500 discount that was offered at the time, which he ended up extending to all new amp sales anyway. Jesse

I wanted to say thank you for taking the time to look at and fix my amplifier- I've had it back in the system for a few days now and it appears to be working perfectly again. As much as I enjoy the 275 amplifier the 285 is head and shoulders better IMO; it has the warmth and tubyness while at the same time solid state like bass and clarity and good high end which by comparison seems pretty rolled off on the 275. Anyway, thank you for stepping up and offering service for this great amp- while frustrating that @Ar9Jim Jim Clark ducked out it is understandable and I don't harbor any hard feelings towards the guy. You know what I think would be awesome is short video review from Bob Carver. Get him in front of a camera with one of these amplifiers and let him give his pitch. I have to admit the short video of him telling a small crowd that the 275 was one of his best designs was the tipping point for me when I made my initial purchase.

Nice Celica! I had a '76 decades ago fun little car

Welcome! You have a couple of very nice amps, some of Carver's best work I think. Curious to hear about the rest of your system(s) we like pictures

Sunfire Pre-amp & Amp woes
jjptkd replied to Tom Charles's topic in The Welcome Shop (Please read first)
Welcome to the forum! Have you considered one of the newer Carver tube amps? They sound excellent with Klipsch speakers. -
It is a very difficult task too many variables like room acoustics, equipment matching, type of music, how loud you play and of course personal taste. It does get me that almost every single review seems to be positive and the unit being reviewed is almost always a "must have." I went through too many reviews to count when buying headphones recently before I decided to do my own in home trials very few online reviews matched up with what I experienced personally.

The Receivers? I personally prefer the original still have a couple in use. The TGR-3 was built in China after Bob Carver sold the company to Elan. I found the newer models to be a bit more black or neutral sounding where the older units seem to have a touch more flavor not by a lot but noticeable. All in all they are very similar and both decent units.

A guy turned me on to the Hospital grade cords awhile back as a cheap alternative to the fancy cables, the plugs are tight fitting and seem to be good quality. Other generic cords can be found online for about what it costs to ship them. Factory Sunfire cords are a 14ga 2-prong but a 3-prong works just fine. https://www.ebay.com/itm/325455731917?hash=item4bc6ac5ccd:g:~JIAAOSwRJJjknKo&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA0DLe4ohlMddNeiZ%2FYNiH7%2FOwT8QP2sz5FcS%2FQ0i5l%2FyidllsHGKm8bY8X9uzF8K3nnctt6GWsk%2FsdrNKyHJAv%2Bw6OeNfIf0%2BzyLxfBOYoqnCRTQVu00WWANpoY6aDwjF7bp6jfMiDbsECGVF3ut%2FYzBLRlloGnHdCAA8yykzAyW%2FTO7WGfAEs29fvHSWZBHweEoDnhI2plAnkH68Q%2Fr2r652wLeMISnKJftpyMcLc0UNF1t9gtPmThCLaUzy0X%2FBf70qFytYzk%2Fj%2BDqI9hC%2BKq0%3D|tkp%3ABk9SR5zJ0M_5YQ

The Sunfire remotes are pretty much the same TG-II through TG-5 which include the first 3 receivers I believe the IV & 5 have a couple pro logic buttons that the earlier ones don't have but all basic functions and controls are the same. The very top one in the picture above is the correct remote and will work on both units, once you have a working remote you can buy a universal and clone / copy it pretty easily.

I know for a fact they can deliver that power one channel at a time seen it with my own eyes many times at Bill Flannery's on his test bench. As for all channels driven? Don't think that's physically possible- I'm sure there's an upper limit on total output power that gets divided amongst all channels not sure what it is on those amps. Bill once told me the Sunfire Ultimate Receivers maxed out at around 575 watts total output no matter how you slice it; roughly 290x2 or 85x7 I'm sure the amplifiers are probably the same way.

Your space is huge-- you trying to fill the whole thing or just get sound in one area? I don't think any "home" speaker is going to fill that space.

It seems every speaker I've owned has had their pluses and minuses, have yet to find one that is perfect. Even my current Franken-Klipsch creation as good as they sound now it took the right equipment matching to bring out their best.
