Sounds like you have the infamous ribbon buzz. Getting them repaired "if your going to spend the cash" is the only way, not aware of any drop in replacements.

The trick behind some of Infinity's speaker designs is if you have them positioned correctly, "from the sweet spot" the sound stage is awesome. Spooked the shit out of me the first time I heard it, vocals were coming from in between the speakers (center stage).
