Just can't lie around in bed. I'm not overexerting myself, though.

It's been a long time since I've read that poem, and I still tear up. All that's wrong with society today is all in there. Everybody needs to Man Up

From a Sci-Fi standpoint, the Foundation Trilogy and the Dune Trilogy stand out for me. And of course, for the humor, Doug Adams Hitchhikers Guide series.

What's your favorite music to get pumped up with?

Carlos teams up sometimes with Ottmar Liebert. One song, Samba Pa Ti, that Santana did way back in the early 1970s, Ottmar did the acoustic guitar work and Carlos the electric. They reprised that work on Ottmar's 1992 album Solo Pa Ti where the acoustic was the lead and Carlos played the bridge on electric. -

Mort, do you have a link?

Ed, you just can't avoid a fight, can you. I know you know what I meant, so I'll leave it at that.
-
I don't know, but probably, or some of the positive reviews (the negative ones missed the forest). Ed, I think you misunderstood what I said. I meant that you can't see waves passing by. Only waves that meet your rods and cones are "seen".
-
Well, like all waves, you can't see them directly, only their reflection. Sound reflecting off your eardrum or light reflecting off of surfaces.

I picked up this book at the library and just finished it. I'd give it 3 out of 5 stars. It was good for me, someone who enjoys music but can't play worth a crap. I never formally studied music, but I learned to read music in an attempt to play the piano, trumpet and guitar, all without much success. If you are a professional musician and studied musicology, you might be disappointed with the music parts but interested in the physiology of the brain parts, and vice versa. The author is a former pop record producer who decided to get a PhD in neuroscience. He really isn't an author (and it shows). And he likes to share stories about all the pop stars he's met. The book rambles a little, but it was worth slogging through.

The Pretender — Jackson Browne "The Pretender" I'm going to rent myself a house In the shade of the freeway I'm going to pack my lunch in the morning And go to work each day And when the evening rolls around I'll go on home and lay my body down And when the morning light comes streaming in I'll get up and do it again Amen Say it again Amen I want to know what became of the changes We waited for love to bring Were they only the fitful dreams Of some greater awakening I've been aware of the time going by They say in the end it's the wink of an eye And when the morning light comes streaming in You'll get up and do it again Amen Caught between the longing for love And the struggle for the legal tender Where the sirens sing and the church bells ring And the junk man pounds his fender Where the veterans dream of the fight Fast asleep at the traffic light And the children solemnly wait For the ice cream vendor Out into the cool of the evening Strolls the Pretender He knows that all his hopes and dreams Begin and end there Ah the laughter of the lovers As they run through the night Leaving nothing for the others But to choose off and fight And tear at the world with all their might While the ships bearing their dreams Sail out of sight I'm going to find myself a girl Who can show me what laughter means And we'll fill in the missing colors In each other's paint-by-number dreams And then we'll put our dark glasses on And we'll make love until our strength is gone And when the morning light comes streaming in We'll get up and do it again Get it up again I'm going to be a happy idiot And struggle for the legal tender Where the ads take aim and lay their claim To the heart and the soul of the spender And believe in whatever may lie In those things that money can buy Though true love could have been a contender Are you there? Say a prayer for the Pretender Who started out so young and strong Only to surrender

My Sunfire True Subwoofer Mk.II is in a corner on a 15" piece of travertine tile on top of carpet. The active driver faces the side wall (and reflects directly into the room). The passive radiator faces the back wall.

I just Googled Lossless Downloads and came upon THIS.

You typically don't need nearly the power at 4kHz that you do at, say, 40Hz. I'd certainly risk the low impedance at that frequency rather than a frequency demanding a lot of power (to move lots of air).

The very best thing is wire and solder, but if you want to go solderless, get some solderless connectors from Parts Express.
-
Well, the lead doesn't need to be grounded (but it should be if you want to make sure that nothing goes to the attached speaker in the low position). With it ungrounded, it will never shut off your speaker completely.
-
I would have thought that the two outer leads would give you a fixed resistance regardless of where the shaft was turned to. I think you want to hook up the pot like this: You should have wires coming out of the crossover for the woofer and the rest if it's a 2-way crossover. I need to understand what this device was doing in the circuit. Was it attenuating just the woofer, or did it have an effect on the other speakers also? Do you remember how it was hooked up before you took it apart? I'm flying blind here.

It is simply a potentiometer. The three legs are shown in the diagram below. The outer two are usually the horizontal legs and the middle is the wiper. To get the value of the pot, measure between the outer legs. To get the direction of the pot measure from the middle to one of the legs as you rotate the wiper.

Have you heard the Dylan Christmas CD.

Of course, you would also generate all the music of every other artist while doing this. So, your pruning algorithm could be to take out your least favorite artists. But, you'd still have zillions of combinations that don't amount to music, text or anything else. Keyboards and monkeys come to mind.

Well, the Squeezeboxes I have aren't even available anymore. They were built by Slim Devices that was bought by Logitech. The ones I have don't have a color screen. I like to think I got mine before Logitech had a chance to screw it up (but the Transporter is still available, which is the top of the line "audiophile" component). IIRC, my Squeezeboxes cost about $120 apiece. Back when I got mine (two years ago at Christmas), they were giving away a Squeezebox if you bought a Transporter. The closest equivalent in todays lineup is the "touch".
-
I use a Squeezebox. Lots of FM radio stations you can get on it.
-
They can, sure. I usually use coax out for DVD-A, but the Oppo will decode it DVD-A.
-
Interesting. It seems to all boil down to bits/second, which is generally what that figure of merit listed in your other post is, regardless of whether you take a big bite at a slower rate (PCM) or lots of little nibbles (DSD).

I have some classical stuff (Handel, Mozart, Grofé ans Shostakovich) on DVD-A. I also have Gaucho (Steely Dan) Tommy (The Who) and Love (The Beatles) on DVD-A. The Pop/Rock stuff sounds terrific, and some of the classical stuff sounds great too. Others less so. I think it has to do with the master and the mastering. But, because none of the stuff I have is done at 192kHZ (only 24/96), SACD is superior. I also have a couple of DTS CDs that sound pretty good (my favorite is The Police Every Breath You Take DTS CD.
