I am looking for a pair of speakers for a system I'm setting up in my study.  I'm somewhat limited on space, so I'm looking at 'bookshelf' sized speakers which I plan to use with a subwoofer.  The subwoofer for now is a Polk PSW-111, but it will likely be replaced with a Sunfire sub.   I will be driving them with a Carver 900 (for now - maybe upgrading in the future).  I could go with a bit larger speakers if I can put them on stands and fit them in a corner.

I have had good experiences with JBL, Polk, and Infinity speakers.  I'm a little fond of the sound of vintage Infinities.  In attempting to get the best bang for the buck, I'm willing to refresh a pair of vintage speakers but am not looking for something just for 'vintage' sake.

Any advice?

How limited on space are you? Approx dimensions would help. As far as Polks or JBL, I would be looking at Polk Monitor 7's or JBL Decade L36.

The CRM2's with a good subwoofer would be good choice. Early reviews of the Carverfest Ribbon speaker indicate that it may even be better. Search for the thread. The downside is you would have to wait until the Fall for the Carverfest. Kve777's CRM2's look like a good deal.

I have a pair of Polk Monitor 5's that I'm pretty fond of. Theybwould be the bottom end of your price. They can usually be had for around $100. The Sunfire Cinema Ribbons are a spectacular speaker and they would run around your max of 1k. There are all kinds of brands and models in between!

I think he's going with these:

Have not heard those yet but I do love the fat mids (tube sound) of these. and they can be had for less than 1K

Good choice, Steve, and a real deal from Kev.
