LVMAN777 352 Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 "..The principal determinants of sound quality in your listening room...are the loudspeakers ... My best guess as to why the loudspeaker-comes-first principle has not prevailed in the audiophile world is that a new pair of loudspeakers tends to present a problem in interior decoration. Swapping amplifiers is so much simpler, not to mention spouse-friendlier, and the initial level of anticipation is just as high, (before the eventual letdown)..." http://www.biline.ca/audio_critic/audio_critic_web1.htm#acl
UncleMeat 1,173 Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Strange, I've also found that the higher quality the amp; the better it makes lesser quality speakers sound. Of course better speakers will sound better overall; but if the amp is lacking to begin with you will never get their full potential.
LVMAN777 352 Posted August 31, 2015 Author Posted August 31, 2015 True... but no amplifier can make a mediocre speaker sound good...
UncleMeat 1,173 Posted September 1, 2015 Posted September 1, 2015 I've got a pair of 200W stereo-in-a-box set Panasonics that might change your mind. Honestly, with the right setup they sound just a bit below my Magnepan IIB's. You don't get the tall soundstage effect but the sound they produce for such an inexpensive speaker on my Carver amps is pretty amazing. Control of the drivers with a high quality amp can go a long, long way. The amplifier is the foundation for good sound; the speakers should be tailored to fit your preferences for overall sound (brighter or darker, larger soundstage, etc.), compatibility with amp, and fitting the space they are in.
PDR 1,194 Posted September 1, 2015 Posted September 1, 2015 As long as your using the proper size amp, I think the room itself is probably a larger factor.......
PMAT 2,042 Posted September 1, 2015 Posted September 1, 2015 Yeah bad rooms suck so just move your system.
chiroacademy 833 Posted September 1, 2015 Posted September 1, 2015 I'm a firm believer that the room is almost as important as your speakers. The difference can be startling. Not an imaginary, I think that sounds better, but an instant significant noticeable improvement. Plus it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. There's more to it than getting a flat response. I'm still learning and adjusting my room but I've already made a good system sound great by working on reflecting areas, diffusion and absorption. 1
dr_gallup 42 Posted September 1, 2015 Posted September 1, 2015 While I love a good quality powerful amp I definitely believe the speakers are far more important. That does not mean they have to cost a small fortune, there have been many good sounding moderately priced speakers. The original Advents are one of many examples. The room and speaker interaction can hardly be separated. They have to compliment each other. But the job of the amp is far simpler than the job of the speaker. The amp just has to increase the signal voltage without distortion or running out of current capability. It does not have to convert one form of energy into another, provide dispersion, blend multiple drivers seamlessly, etc.
kve777 6,889 Posted September 1, 2015 Posted September 1, 2015 Even old speakers can sound good! Wharfedale's from the 60's.
morris 390 Posted September 1, 2015 Posted September 1, 2015 Nice speakers Kevin. I bet they work good with old tube amps from the 60's.
