PMAT 2,038 Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 Yikes! That's evil. Bass traps an lot's of other acoustic treatments needed. There's no way for the ALS's to breathe in that set-up, but they would act like bass traps on their own. Oh and UncleMeat: just WTF is "winter" in the SF Bay area???? 52 and breezy of course. The fog makes the sidewalks so slippery.
UncleMeat 1,173 Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 Oh and UncleMeat: just WTF is "winter" in the SF Bay area???? Rain storms; it's predicted to be a wet winter given the "El Nino" ocean currents this year. Kinda hard to put in stone and brick patios when everything turns to mud so we were in a big hurry to getter' done; then the troubles with a shady contractor forced me to fire him and re-hire his crew to finish installing the brick and concrete patio borders. Everything that we planned is still not done yet, I'm building the fence along our retaining wall myself between rain storms now and still need to finish re-grading the rest of the yard and installing a stepping stone path around the back. I've got a yard of drain rock and 2 yards of pea gravel on the driveway that also needs to go in to set the stepping stones on. At least the 20+ yards of dirt are hauled outta here and our patios and drainage systems are in; the rest is pretty easy by comparison.

Winter in SF bay sounds a bit like spring in Canada doesn't it Rod ? How do they survive it?
RodH 4,866 Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 Somewhat similar. We have to thaw out our rain for the 'wet', though. Sounds like a lot of work, bummer about the contractor. I recently paid a large deposit on a new high-efficiency furnace* only to later discover the contractor closed up shop and disappeared. * a furnace is a thing we need in our homes up here to keep from freezing to death in the winter BTW!
B-Man 4,780 Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 Contractors like that are why you should have a nice .44 magnum !!! Pull a Dirty Harry on his @$$.... Sorry to hear that - thieves are my #1 pet peeve.
weitrhino 1,443 Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 Martin, is there any way you can post a diagram of your room showing speaker placement, listening position, and any other major elements in the room? 1 square = 1 foot Damn, Martin! I thought I'd offer a few pointers on how to set up your Amazings by drawing from my own experience with mine, but....... That room shape truly sucks. No surprise you can't get good imaging in there but brother I can assure you the problem is not the Amazings!

No surprise you can't get good imaging in there but brother I can assure you the problem is not the Amazings! The room is a challenge for sure, but don't get discouraged. Address early reflections like in the C9 manual and add some good sized bass traps in the box shaped areas, and the room can be made to work well. Add absorption panels in areas of walls that are near the speakers. Basically if you treat the areas of the walls near the speakers (the walls you wish were not there) it can sound as if those walls were removed or moved back several feet because of the absorption. If its glass windows or doors use heavy curtains. Well worth the time and effort IMHO. Can improve your "system", room included, more than any pc of gear ever! You can see the effect the amazing speakers had on the room and they are not even made for that purpose. Fun winter projects. There are few perfect rooms, some just take more effort than others.
weitrhino 1,443 Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 The biggest issue I see based on the diagram is the open space to the right with a closed space to the left. No amount of bass traps or other absorption will fix such an inherent imbalance so imaging and soundstage will always suffer. Basically there's no room to breathe on the left and too much on the right. Bass traps shouldn't be needed at all because so much bass energy can escape already. The room probably never gets loaded. The next glaring issue is the narrow nature of the room, so narrow that proper placement for the Amazings cannot be achieved. I don't see a good alternative arrangement either. Perhaps I got lucky with the room shape I had. The soundstage was absolutely enthralling with my Amazings.
UncleMeat 1,173 Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 I was going to say the same weitrhino, but I was having trouble finding the correct way to describe it. I think the open doorway needs some bi-fold doors. I have a similar situation and the door to the left of my left speaker has a bi-fold door to close it off. The only other advice I have is to make the toe-in 2" or less (the difference measured to the back wall of the inside and outside edges).
Ar9Jim 6,512 Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Good idea about the door to close off the imbalance from the open area at the right. Its the room you have, or the hand your dealt. Can room treatments make big improvement ? Absolutely. Even the basic "live end - dead end" principal would help huge if applied here. May never sound like Carnegie Hall but its your home. Many of us also have uniquely shaped rooms. Very few people are fortunate enough to have rooms designed with any thought given to acoustics. So you live with what you have and improve it. Don't be discouraged. Lots of info. available and its time well spent.
