After reflowing any solder joints that looked remotely suspicious and reassembling.. Popping noises are gone!! Yippee While I was in there I noticed the transformers have jumpers for 240v (the unit is 120 volt supply, I'm running it on 240v with a stepdown) if anyone knows whether it's just a matter of Changing the jumpers or if there is more to it than that , would be a big help? The preamp may not be so easy to find the problem.. Might be time to make a dedicated thread for it.

No need to change the capacitor across the switch also? it does appear to be all there is on the primary side of the transformers. Im borrowing a buzzy little stepdown for the moment so changing the transformers setup to 240 will be great. The preamp is a CT28v , I have been unable to come up with a service manual for this one

Shamrock 2 Posted December 30, 2015 Author Posted December 30, 2015 I changed out the main fuse from a 12 amp to a 6 amp one, and redid the transformer jumpers for 230 volts . It worked a treat. It seems to sound better than when I was using it on 120 with the huckery little stepdown transformer I had borrowed Thanks for the input guys. You are now directly connected to your mains with more available current.
