Rickallan 6 Posted February 8 Posted February 8 Greetings to Carver Fans! My name is Rick and I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area. I just aquired "Bob" today, an MXR-130 wiith beautiful sound, but a slight problem as the volume control seems to be out of control spining full circle without stops at mininum or maximum level positions, and having different levels for left and right channels. Looking for suggestions, or for a replacement volume control assembly. Glad to be part of the Carver family and thanks for any help. Rick in SF 6
3M_Audio 1,726 Posted February 8 Posted February 8 Welcome Rick. I haven't worked with an MXR-130 so can't give you any specific input on that volume control, but the service manual & parts list can be found here by clicking on the 'Manuals and Specsheets' link at the top of any page. And a search here might also get you some good info. The MXR-130s are pretty popular units and serviceable. And there are a couple of Carver-specialty service outfits you can also contact: Nelion Audio Repair Carver Audio Repair 2
Sk1Bum 10,732 Posted February 8 Posted February 8 Welcome aboard Rick. Glad you found us. The MXR-130 receiver is popular here, and there are quite a few threads about it. 1
Community Admin AndrewJohn 9,722 Posted February 8 Community Admin Posted February 8 Welcome @Rickallan, glad you found us. I'm not familiar with the 130 personally, but I wonder if the knob has become disengaged from the pot it controls. Some Carver knobs are caps on a plastic under-knob, and the glue might have dried up and allowed the outer metal cap to spin on the plastic under-part. Gently pull the knob, to see if it comes off. It's hard to imagine the internal potentiometer going more than min to max, mechanically. If the outer shell of the knob slips off, see if the under-knob it was glued to, has the proper movement. If so, you can align the index dot with min or max, then reglue it with some epoxy or other glue. This is only a suggestion to research what is going on..., I don't have one, so I can't say for sure. Someone else may know, and provide better guidance. 2

BobTFM35 2,489 Posted February 9 Posted February 9 @Rickallan With a little bit of research (you can help to confirm my findings) you might find that this could be your solution. Problem - Volume control pot not working and spins. MXR-130 Service manual reported Supplier Part number VBV16-154BT4K7 (Look on page 26 of the copied version (Page 28 from the original printed version as shown at the bottom of the page) of the MXR-130 service manual for Item number VR452) MXR-6250 Service manual reports the same Supplier Part number VBV16-154BT4K7 (Look on page 25 (31) of the MXR-6250 service manual for Item number VR902) Looking for a volume pot for an MXR-130 did not come up with a solution BUT looking for a volume pot for an MXR-6250 came up with this, CARVER 6250 RECEIVER PARTS volume balance board VR-764 with pots complete | eBay The next step might be a visual confirmation that yours looks like what is pictured in the ebay offering. The 8 pin pot is for volume control. Also, a question to the seller might be if the pot (the 8 pin pot) has a min and max stopping point and does not spin 360 degrees. Best of luck. 2
