Audioquest 8 Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 Opinions? .....Going for look & listen tonight. Supposedly pretty much mint. Thinking of these Polk SDA's for my HT setup
kve777 6,888 Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 You would be a fool NOT to put these in a HT. I wish I could find some locally. I am VERY happy with my RTA-15tl's. Polk and Carver go well together.

Polk and Carver go well together. The reason I was thinking about these is my brother has a pair of SDA-SRS (?) speakers from the same era waiting for me. They are a large bookshelf style that are oriented horizontally and each have 2 -6.5" woofers and 2 tweeters (same visual type as the ones I am going to view) . I remember them sounding quite amazing a few years back. I'd use those for the rear channels
jldeni 439 Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 Those are awesome speakers. I'd scoop them up in a flash if I were you. 1
Ratamahatta 437 Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 $400 run don't walk, I have a pair of these and they sound fantastic!
Guest RodH Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 And if you decide you don't like 'em - send 'em my way!
Audioquest 8 Posted October 8, 2010 Author Posted October 8, 2010 Due to overwhelming approval I'll be picking them up tomorrow. It wasn't in the cards for him to now meet tonight, so he said he'd wait for me first tomorrow to see and get first crack at them.....which likely won't be a difficult decision.
Ratamahatta 437 Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 great, when you want to get your hands dirty with some mods on them let me know, I have rebuilt the cross overs and installed new tweeters in mine. there are other mods you can do as well. 1

madmike46 398 Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 And if you decide you don't like 'em - send 'em my way! Or you could send them my way, I'm closer . The company I work for is in Red Deer, could probably send them down on the truck that comes down once a week.
madmike46 398 Posted October 9, 2010 Posted October 9, 2010 Opinions? .....Going for look & listen tonight. Supposedly pretty much mint. Thinking of these Polk SDA's for my HT setup So Audioquest did you get them? Inquiring minds want to know.
Audioquest 8 Posted October 9, 2010 Author Posted October 9, 2010 Can I put the Polk's (Fender) back now, please? Not today, my good man. I'm feeling saucy. Yup, mission accomplished. They are in SUPERB and like new condition. All drivers working, no scratches, grill and side cloths are perfect.Even came with the factory interconnect cord. Will post photos when they are in their final resting place. Man are these suckers heavy! Good thing my wife has no back issues
Audioquest 8 Posted October 9, 2010 Author Posted October 9, 2010 The fellow also threw in a mint Sony CDP-C701ES 5 disc changer with rosewood side panels, and a mint Yamaha RX-V1070 receiver. Also included a 10' pair of factory terminated 12 ga. Monster cable. I'm currently listening to the CDP on my 2 channel Platinum's system and it sounds pretty amazing.

Right now I think that there is only 2 or 3 of us that own anything Carver. The other 2 I'm not sure if they still live here, haven't seen them in years.
Audioquest 8 Posted October 10, 2010 Author Posted October 10, 2010 Ok, here is a preliminary shot of today's score. Ignore the "nice" wood panel walls as that is the winter project to yet be dry-walled. Anyway the room as about 14' wide by 23' long. I plan on moving the components to the rear or side wall once I get a longer HDMI cable as these monsters take up a lot more space than my previous speakers. Difficult to say how they compare to the Platinums as an A/B comparison would be difficult as both systems are on different floors. My brother lent me the newest Rambo movie as I never did see it. These Polks have a lot of impact paired with the 2 M&K subs. I set up the receiver to not have a center channel and it really doesn't leave any audible hole with only the 2 Polks up front so ignore the MK laying on it's side below the LCD
Ratamahatta 437 Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 if possible you should set up along the long wall, sda's usually require 3 feet on the sides to prevent reflections getting to your ears before the source of the dimensional drivers, if not possible room treatments on the wall next to the speaker will usually do the trick.
zumbini 6,147 Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 weitrhino is correct. The line of 4 mids should be on the inside, closest to the opposite speaker. The other pair of mids is responsible for the "dimensional array" effect. Speaking of the dimensional array", do you have the interconnect cable that runs from one speaker to the other?
Ratamahatta 437 Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 Aren't they flip-flopped? no, the 2.3tl's set up opposite. The tl's came out after these and have 4 stereo drivers and 2 dimensional. These are the regular 2.3's 2 stereo 2 dimensional and 2 subs the subs go to the outside. I have both.
