dennismiller55 4,809 Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Where do you get your inspiration for trying new music? Where do research artist and their discography? Where do you buy your music? Lately, I have been watching this sites forum “What are you listening to right now?” It is like being privileged to rummage through your personal collection. It mostly reminds me of an artist that I have not listened to in quite sometime. It gets me out of the same old rut. THANKS! I subscribe to “Relix” and “Blues Revue” which come with sample disk. Some of the artist I don’t care for. Then some I think “Why have I never heard of them before”, and “I want more”. So I look them up and buy one of their albums. I suppose that is exactly why artist want their music in these samplers. I also get suggestion from my daughters. They know what I like. In turn I forward all my samplers to them. I also have collected a lot of the “Paste” magazine samplers. Unfortunately, they are out of business now. I tend to research artist at Allmusic.com and Amazon reviews & recommendation. I also look for artist website. All of which have samples to hear. I usually purchase my CD’s on Amazon, half.com, eBay, and sometimes the artist website. Rarely do I have time to hit the pawn shops, but sometimes you can find old treasures.
zumbini 6,147 Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Back when I was single and had disposable income I'd spend hours at Chicago Digital in Oak Park, IL. They sold new and used CD's, had a huge selection, and let you listen to any disc prior to purchase. It wasn't unusual for me to spend $200 there almost every week. For LP's I would search through the bargain bins at Tower Records or Westchester Music regularly. I estimate that close to 70% of my vinyl collection was purchased for less than $5 per record. To expand my horizons I listened to WXRT (AOR) and WBEZ (jazz) plus a number of local college stations. I also subscribed to numerous free or inexpensive samplers such as the A Little on the CD Side series. These days I watch “What are you listening to right now?” and pick up most of my music at yard/garage sales.
oldtexasdog 2,456 Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 I get a lot of ideas from here and already have a pretty good collection going. I shop at half price books a lot, and for a new release use Amazon now that Virgin is gone. Thinking about a music server though?
RichP714 3,163 Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 .....Lately, I have been watching this sites forum “What are you listening to right now?” We have archived the topic a couple of times also: http://thecarversite.com/yetanotherforum/default.aspx?g=topics&f=62 ....I tend to research artist at Allmusic.com I rummage through allmusic.com quite a bit as well; my wife turned me on to Pandora radio.
peck555 366 Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 I like Pandora on my ROKU streaming device, the files are at least 96/24 and sound great through my receiver. I listen to WBGO(jazz), and WXPK(rock), my wife also makes suggestions that she hears on WFUV(Fordham college).
RichP714 3,163 Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Where do you get your inspiration for trying new music? ........ Also check: How Do You Connect to Internet Radio? Got any good streaming radio stations to share with the forum??? Radio paradise
BluesMan57 1,411 Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Well to tell the truth I find most of the new music I listen to by listening to my Sirius radio on the Deep Tracks and the Blues channels. Also Pandora is another source and I am also lucky enough to have an older brother that still turns me on to new artists from time to time. And the" What are you listening to now " section of the forum is also a very handy resource. When I here or see something intresting I will go to I-Tunes and check it out. And when it comes to LP's there are several record stores in Orlando that have new and old records.
weitrhino 1,443 Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 I live in a social backwater where there are no record stores anywhere inside of a 2 hour drive. Well, I can get to Florence, SC in about an hour but I haven't found a store there worth a crap. It's disgusting, really, but that's how it is. So I lean on Plixid.com for samples and then order what I like. It's a crapshoot but there's always something fresh.
jldeni 439 Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 I'm usually motivated by What Are You Listening To Right Now? to find certain music (or samples) on the internet just to try it out. If I like what I hear, I'll typically put it in my shopping cart or on my wish list at Amazon. Not to be too impulsive, It typically will ferment there for a couple days before I actually place the order. Additionally, I occasionally go to the new/used record/cd stores - there are two good ones left in this city. However much fun that is, it takes time and I haven't had a lot lately. After that, I listen to some radio programming (Acoustic Storm is my favorite) and will scan the net and the radio dial for more. Good topic!
SteveFord 1,119 Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 I listen to FM a lot so stumble across new artists every once in a while. If I like an artist I'll do a search online for them and then end up with most, if not all, of their releases. I get new releases from Amazon on vinyl (if possible) and there's a used record and cd store up the road which usually has some good stuff. It's always a gamble with buying a used record as they can be perfect or rice krispies.
Guest kevinahcc20 Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 For me the best option is the local library...has an online searchable database and allows you to request items online that are then retrieved and placed in a pickup area saving the time of looking through the whole collection (around 6,500 CDs). That way I can use forums like this one to get recommendations and request from library at the same time. They have a remarkably good selection (although no exotic media like SACD) and the jazz and classical discs are generally in fairly pristine condition...popular music is more hit and miss. I figure I'm already paying for the service via my property taxes so may as well get the benefit of it!
dennismiller55 4,809 Posted November 20, 2011 Author Posted November 20, 2011 Our local library is lacking. However, a couple of years ago I was visiting my daughter in Neptune Beach (Jacksonville) FL. During the day while she was at work I spent time at the local library. I was amazed at the number of CD's in their collection. I forgot about this source. Maybe our library has expanded their inventory. I think I will give them a visit.
Guest kevinahcc20 Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 Interesting thing with our library is that they participate in a multi-county library cooperative.. I can access material in the other libraries through their online site. It just takes a few days longer to get there due to inter-library shipping time.
weitrhino 1,443 Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 This may be old hat to some of you, but I recently discovered a cool site for bootleg recordings mostly of unreleased live shows made from soundboard or audience recordings. I've sampled a few and found the quality to quite good. Right now I'm listening to Frank Zappa live from Rotterdam, 1980 and it is excellent. Check out the vast library of shows for download! http://bigozine2.com/roio/?p=987
