Papajoe 221 Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 I was once told that when you are auditioning a pair of speakers in an audio store, that all the cones of the other pairs of speakers in the room are vibrating also. In so doing, they are also putting out vibrations that can affect the sound quality of the played speakers. What do you guys think about that?
Papajoe 221 Posted November 9, 2012 Author Posted November 9, 2012 RodH- You are right; but, I think that it had more to do with the fact that, in some of those rooms, that they have multiple pairs of speakers all lined up in rows, facing the listener. Thus the spurious vibrations were directed at them, muddying the sound.
weitrhino 1,443 Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 Agreed. Of course surfaces will vibrate to some degree at some frequency, the thing to consider is that additional non-amplified speakers will vibrate even more because this is what they are designed to do. I suspect this ancillary effect would be most prominent in the mid-range frequencies with a sharp roll-off at either end. This additional resonance would tend to enhance the fullness of the tested speakers and be more pronounced when some threshold volume is reached.
kve777 6,888 Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 I've put 20 pairs of speakers into my living room, so speakers sound just like in the store!
zumbini 6,147 Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 Great solution Kevin. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em!
VTypeV4 37 Posted November 10, 2012 Posted November 10, 2012 I've put 20 pairs of speakers into my living room, so speakers sound just like in the store! Brilliant!
Papajoe 221 Posted November 10, 2012 Author Posted November 10, 2012 What do you call that Surround Sound 19.1 ? LOL
Gene C 1,748 Posted November 10, 2012 Posted November 10, 2012 What do you call that Surround Sound 19.1 ? LOL LOL! The real question is would you even be able to hear that one sub?
PDR 1,194 Posted November 10, 2012 Posted November 10, 2012 In the back of my room I store all my extra speakers....I've never checked to see if they vibrate or not. There is a total of 90 drivers....between the 2 arrays and center. Now I just have one set back there while the other is in use. I'll check to see what happens when I'm home next, but cause they sit in a corner I bet they move. There is also 16 x5" planers...The Daytons(Sunfire)....and 16 x5" ribbons (Founteks) wonder if they vibrate as well? My room is well treated so maybe its not an issue...would be interesting to take measurements on REW with the arrays in, then out of the room. I'll try it, I havnt taken measurements with the arrays yet anyway.
kve777 6,888 Posted November 11, 2012 Posted November 11, 2012 I call it 20.5. Actually, I have two 1960's Fisher consoles I could use as furniture and subs, they can take two 12" subs each, kinda cool with an NAD 2200PE powering each cabinet. Just gotta get a deal on 4 subs...
