  1. What are the best record sleeves to use? Music Fidelity sleeves or just any non paper sleeves like those from Diskeeper that are quite a bit cheaper? I suppose that $25 for 50 high quality sleeves is not that expensive but the Diskeeper sleeves are $15 for 50 sleeves and are see through. I still don't get why some new records come with great internal sleeves and some come with the standard paper sleeves that I hate? I need to invest in new inner sleeves and the external sleeves that protect the albums artwork. Example: "The Wall" came with very thick internal sleeves and "Moving Pictures" at 200 gram weight also came with a inner sleeve that has the lyrics on it but not a good sleeve for anti-static.
  2. Went with Miles Davis "Kind Of Blue" Simon and Garfunkel's "Greatest Hits" and Vivaldi "The Four Seasons" Direct To Disk pressing Jazz-Classic Rock & Classical perfection $85 Total but 3 great new records now in my growing vinyl collection Since I bought the Denon DL-103 I have listened to nothing but Vinyl. Still can't figure out how to load photo's any larger than this one.... Hmm......................
  3. This is fantastic Direct To Disk simply can't be beat.......................
  4. Thanks for the link it was a very good read.
  5. Just bought "Vivaldi" "The Four Seasons" from Sound Stage Direct. It's advertised as a Direct To Disk Recording in 180 Gram weight vinyl. I have never heard of this before and I have just begun to build a new record collection. Does anyone here understand exactly what Direct To Disk actually means and what it entails as well as any benefits to the sound playback on vinyl. Thanks Guys
  6. Welcome Stan, to the best site about both new and vintage audio equipment that I have ever found online. Your excellent background in audio is a big plus for all of us here at TheCarverSite. Personally, I have never found a better bunch of guys than the very helpful members of this site and I started by simply wanting a few manual printouts. My personal knowledge base was very limited when I started here and it's still no where near as high as the majority of the members I have had the pleasure of dealing with. I can state with absolute confidence that we all look forward to your future postings. We also love projects and photo's
  7. Should I buy the 180 gram weight version or the colored vinyl version? I was thinking the colored vinyl version might be closer to the original and it looks cool as well. I'm looking for the 2 best from Miles Davis and "Birth Of Cool" and "Kind Of Blue" seem to be the easiest to find at good prices so far. How about Diana Krall "All For You"? I'm trying to get male and female vocals if indeed they actually sing? Thanks Zumbini I really appreciate you taking the time to type out this list. You guys rock
  8. No one addressed your interest in Ribbon tweeters. I have never owned any speakers with ribbon tweeters but many of the members here on the site are using Carver speakers that use both standard woofers for bass and ribbons for both mid-range and highs. Also Infinity is well known for using ribbon tweeters in their speakers from the 80's. Infinity had a pair of refrigerator sized speakers using about 12 woofers and a full line of ribbons for both mids and highs. They retailed for $20,000 back in 1980 or so. One high end stereo seller I used to visit weekly had a pair of these in the show room and at only 14 years of age allowed me into the high end room to listen to components I would never be able to purchase. Music Craft knew me well and I did buy my first receiver, cassette deck, turntable, and CD player from them back in the early 80's when I was still in High School. Great guys at this store that went out of business back in the early 90's. Planar based headphones are basically full range ribbon drivers or very close to it, if I have my tech correct. Here is a photo of the cheaper version of the large Infinity's from the 80's. The first photo is not Infinity but looks cool.
  9. Hey are you willing to sell your Carver M 500t? I'm looking for one that works perfectly at a fair price but expect you to make some profit. I thinking about buying one in June but figured I would rather have a up-graded MKII model that you have. Plus people here at the site are always good about packaging properly and with a amp that's really important. Thanks for your time. Steve
  10. WOW what a great vinyl collection Thanks for the link to your shelving unit. I have been looking for one for a while
  11. No but I'll check them out. Hey, do you know why there are two different records with two different front covers? These are both in stereo as they sell the mono version for a different price that I did not put a photo up for as I prefer stereo as well.
  12. I was looking for some Jazz and was given a list of good records. Thanks Guys! However, Miles Davis "Kind Of Blue" comes with 2 different album covers for the 180 gram weight version and I don't know why? Why two different covers and two different prices?? Also one is $20 and one is $25 at Sound Stage Direct. If anyone knows of better places to buy vinyl online I'm interested in a different vendor that may have some LP's that S.S.D. does not have.
  13. Maroon 5 "Songs About Jane"
  14. Some "Zeppelin" "MotherShip" re-mastered vinyl
  15. Thanks everyone. That last DBX NX-40 is found on Ebay for about $40. However, the records are harder to find. I saw a few on Ebay that were actually priced very low, but the selection is very limited............
  16. Hey everyone, does anyone know what DBX encoder you use for the DBX encoded records that were released back in the early 80's? My dad owned one and had about 10 DBX encoded LP's that boosted the Dynamic Range and I'm looking for the decoder I need to play these records. It was a small DBX unit that was just looped into the C-1 preamp that now belongs to me
  17. Yeah, but where can I find them? I would prefer not to drop $50 on every record and these average about $50 each at Sound Stage Direct which is where I buy the majority of my vinyl. I tired Music Direct and didn't like the way they packaged the records with standard paper sleeves. I also have to pay tax when I buy from them as they are located in I.L. If anyone knows of any other good record stores besides Sound Stage Direct I'm all for that as well.
  18. Thanks guys I'll buy two and if I like them like I know I will I'll gladly buy more. I guess I should have asked you all to mention your top 5 or 6. I know if you said to pick to Classic rock vinyl records I could never cut it down to just two. Although "Dire Straits" "Brothers In Arms" is a double 180 gram 33 1/3 that is a half speed remaster and is probably my favorite purchase in vinyl. I use it all the time to show off how great vinyl really sounds when it's all set up right and since I bought the Denon DL-103 I'll never buy a MM cartridge again. I have seen the 180 Gram weight 45 RPM double LP's and wondered how they actually sounded. I have mentioned this to others and they think I'm crazy when I say twin LPs at 45 RPM speed. I almost bought Fleetwood Mac "Rumors" in that format but thought it was a mistake so bought the original instead. Billy Joel has the same double 45 RPM for Piano Man and 52nd Street. I guess I'll try the one you mentioned and try out the twin 45 RPM records. Although, any warp at that speed will be greatly exaggerated, correct?
  19. Slow and steady wins the race. No such thing as stupid questions. Welcome to my favorite website to do with everything audio and then some You would think that Vinyl Engine would be better at answering vinyl related questions but I'm a member of both sites and TheCarverSite has been far more helpful to me and these people will answer quickly compared to V.E. You will be surprised at what you can accomplish with some research and help from the people here. Don't sell yourself short. Four years ago I would have never thought I could repair CD players or up-grade a hafler DH-500 amp with new RCA inputs and new speaker binding posts. I know my limits but you can't grow unless you get out of your comfort zone and try things you didn't think you could do. Now I'm not saying to dig in and try too much at the same time, but learning new things is what this site is all about. That and helping out other audio nuts.
  20. I totally get using what works best on metal to metal contacts and in a perfect world that's what I would use as well. But on my limited income I had to use the cheaper stuff that was all of $3 for three separate tubes.
