PMAT 2,039 Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Craigslist "big subwoofer, doesn't work $20" It should have read "Big UGLY subwoofer, doesn't work" It took two people to lift it!
PMAT 2,039 Posted May 9, 2014 Author Posted May 9, 2014 The Drivers were massive 13 inchers! One in the back up top and one in front on the bottom. Sealed configuration.
PMAT 2,039 Posted May 9, 2014 Author Posted May 9, 2014 First, tear the thing apart literally. The front fascia is just butt ugly with ugly cloth. I tore all of it off leaving a basic box. Chucked the amp, it was cooked. Chucked the remote control receiver. Threw the plastic base out too! Time for some walnut. I love walnut.
PMAT 2,039 Posted May 9, 2014 Author Posted May 9, 2014 Time to be handy Andy. Filled the remote hole with a block.
PMAT 2,039 Posted May 9, 2014 Author Posted May 9, 2014 Where the hell are my clamps! Never lend your clamps out! Well, lets see ........... what can I use??
PMAT 2,039 Posted May 9, 2014 Author Posted May 9, 2014 Hey, it worked. OF COURSE IT DID. More than one way to skin a sub.
PMAT 2,039 Posted May 9, 2014 Author Posted May 9, 2014 All trimmed up nice. Wood doesn't match though.
PMAT 2,039 Posted May 9, 2014 Author Posted May 9, 2014 Lets cut the hole and put some seal coat shellac on it.
PMAT 2,039 Posted May 9, 2014 Author Posted May 9, 2014 First coat of black lacquer. Getting interesting.
pindrop 330 Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 I must be hungry, the wood grain looks like a couple of racks of ribs.
PMAT 2,039 Posted May 9, 2014 Author Posted May 9, 2014 Custom walnut baffle for the new 350 watt amp to fit on. Add the amp and the drivers.
zumbini 6,147 Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Nice save Paul! The now discontinued Deep Impact had an MSRP of $1,500. Here's a link to the original owner's manual ==> Legacy Deep Impact Subwoofer
dcl 3,276 Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 From the Leagcy owner's manual: "Each cabinet is impeccably finished on all exposed surfaces with select veneers. The exquisite finish is hand-rubbed several times to assure a patina at home withe most elegant decor." Looks like you have done a factory refurbishment. Very nice!
00cbirdw 195 Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 That was an AWESOME build! You really brought it back to life and made it look GREAT!!! 1
pindrop 330 Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Are both of those drivers or is one passive? Are the two of them suited to the internal volume and did you put any damping material in?
fill35U 1,846 Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Amazing work, Paul! Much better than the original. I'm always impressed by people who know how to work with wood, I can't do a darn thing with the stuff. That's some mighty big chain hanging next to your miter saw! Is that real (made of steel), or just a decoration? 1
