PDR 1,194 Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Off........no small children, Two Jack Russels but they know better..... My new OBs will have grills on the bass drivers. Perry
RichP714 3,163 Posted January 18, 2009 Author Posted January 18, 2009 On. Too many staples on Magnepans. I don't see your vote steve, at the top
RichP714 3,163 Posted January 18, 2009 Author Posted January 18, 2009 Off........no small children' date=' .....[/quote']I voted ON, but I'm patiently waiting for our 3 yr old to know better
Reese 52 Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 I voted "on" -- for the Amazings. Same as Steve said for the Maggies! lol
BillD 239 Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 I voted on for WAF. Also, my cleaning lady would probably vacuum my ribbons
OBI56 23 Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 My Polks sound better with the grilles on (but look better off), the 3A Apogées sound better (and look better) with the grilles off and my MLs ... can't take the grilles off because they are part of the electrostatic array, so it cancels out. No vote from me.
snow 240 Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 I voted off cuz they sound better off but look better on. REGARDS SNOW
Guest Kenhorns Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 On.....for the Cornwalls, (Sounds the same on or off so I go w/ the beauty part and don't fight with the better-half) ,and its not applicable to my Khorns - see Avatar
F1nut 0 Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Since speakers are designed and voiced with the grills on, why the hell would anyone take them off to listen? Besides, when listening one shouldn't be looking at the drivers, kinda counterproductive to the experience.
BillD 239 Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 I find shunting other senses when using one helps the enjoyment. I like to listen to music with my eyes closed and not eating or drinking anything. I like to eat ice cream with my eyes closed and not listening to anything.

Besides, when listening one shouldn't be looking at the drivers, kinda counterproductive to the experience.[/quote'] -personal preference, i feel -as in dynomating woofs, binding post swaps and increasing wire strand count or guage -i really cant tell the diff between on or off...im sure many can tho
TNRabbit 371 Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Since speakers are designed and voiced with the grills on' date=' why the hell would anyone take them off to listen? [/color']Besides, when listening one shouldn't be looking at the drivers, kinda counterproductive to the experience. So following that logic, why would anyone want to upgrade their capacitors, wiring, etc. when the speaker manufacturer clearly designed them as sold? o:)
RichP714 3,163 Posted January 28, 2009 Author Posted January 28, 2009 Since speakers are designed and voiced with the grills on' date=' why the hell would anyone take them off to listen? Besides, when listening one shouldn't be looking at the drivers, kinda counterproductive to the experience.[/quote'] Patently untrue. The diffraction caused by speaker grilless causes a slight dip from (depending on grille material) 2Khz to 6Khz, usually on the order of 1.5 to 2 dB. Most speaker manufacturers have a hard enough time getting a decent crossover together, let alone designing a passband filter to result in a rise at those freqs. Those frequencies happen to be smack dap in the middle of the iformation region, where the human ear's perception of signal clarity is most critical.
PDR 1,194 Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 When I had my arrays done one of the questions that the designer asked was if I would be listening with grills or not. So I assume they take it in to consideration........in the crossover ?? Perry
BillD 239 Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Damn, Perry, those are pretty enough w/o the grilles to cover them up.
Toy Maker 292 Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 On, cuz mine look so damn good with them on. They're like a sexy brunette, with her little black dress on !!! =d>
PDR 1,194 Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Thanks Bill........I'm very pleased:d/ Perry
Guest dreamer Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Grills, we don't need no STEENKIN' grills! ESLs rule, cones drool... :d/
Guest old school Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 I like mine on but the polks look cool when they are off watching all the speakers moving
Guest yzarc Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 On, they reflect the projector light when off. There's nothing like sparkly gold ribbons for distraction when you're trying to watch a movie.
