I hosted a large party last night for the son.'s graduation. I put my infinities on the hot tub and played music for the crowd but not loud at all. When I went to put them away I noticed one grill ajar. I opened it up and the mid dome was in pieces. I don't know what happened. There were some little rascals running around so who knows. I am bummed. I really like these things.

So sorry to hear Paul; hopefully you can find a spare on a speaker repair shop or ebay. If you can send a photo and model number I'll keep my eyes open for it. You can be glad it wasn't one of your AL-III's with a hole poked in the ribbon; but I know that's not the point either, if it was party kids it's really disrespectful to mess with your 5h17.

I feel your pain. It sounds like someone or something gave you a much unwanted graduation present but "stuff happens". About all you can do is reach into your pocket and proceed with repairs and/or replacement. If the one grill was ajar, my guess is that Curious George had a touchy-feely experience but that matters little at this point in time.

I guess I'm lucky in that no one touches any of my equipment not even my wife. That means I am the culprit when and if anything goes wrong (an honor I share with Father Time).

I sincerely hope you are able to repair this to your satisfaction. In the meantime, look on the bright side - your son graduated.

Yes my son is a remarkable human being. It was a great party. 50 people and great food. I can't seem to find any diaphragm replacements anywhere. Buying another set of old drivers just to have the same kind of problem seems awful. this is the big dome 3 inch midrange from the Kappa series, 6, seven, eight, nine. They get brittle with age but this one took a blow I'm sure. After a lot of research about dome midranges, I did find this which seemed interesting. https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/approx-3-midrange/scanspeak-discovery-d7608/9200-10-3-dome-midrange-d75mx41/

Does anyone have information on this modification?

Thanks big Daddy but isn't that the wrong diaphragm? Does it have the same sound quality? It looks like the one Gene said to stay away from.

Kevin (kve777)showed me a video of a guy rebuilding these.I think he is working on an Infinity project and may have some good info..Of course Gene C knows his Infinity stuff and is likely to have the info. you need as you already know.Sorry about the damage.

It looks different, but I can assure you, it has the same sound quality. Michael Marks is THE GUY when it comes to infinity (I would kill to loot his garage!). Gene actually refered me to him:-)

Paul,

You've probably already given this some thought but if I were in your shoes, I'd give serious consideration to not only having the damaged diaphragm repaired, but also pulling the good one from the other speaker cabinet and replacing the diaphragm on it at the same time. Then, when you have grandkids, you'll be all set for another graduation party.

Here is another replacement. They sell it as a 6 ohm infinity replacement.

No, garbage. Do not buy.  The stock speaker is rated between 3.8 and 4 ohms.

You know, that kinda fries me; they are selling something that they KNOW is incorrect.  They are the same shop that sold me the foam surrounds for my AL-III's and advertised them as the correct replacement, but the foam is not close enough to the same shape.

And they can do that due to the original Infinity company is no longer around and those speakers are no longer supported. Have heard more disappointment with those drop in replacements that I have heard good coments. Most of the good comments were people who bought the speakers fucked up so they never got to really her them in their prime. But yeah the specs don't match up.

Caveat emptor baby! Speaking of foisting knowledge they know is incorrect, I wonder where they stand on climate change?

Tree rings, methane, volcanoes, zeropointe vacuum fluctuations...

I simply pointed out that there was contradiction to the "hockey stick" graph; I didn't say that either side knew what the answer was (or could know given the limited data); and I fail to see how this has anything to do with the thread about Paul's Kappa-9 tweeters.

If the mods want to delete my comment about SS's trustworthiness or other OT posts on this thread; that's fine.

I was joking about your prior bad experience with the company, the joke being that they care as much about being correct as Rupert Murdoch does

UncleMeat, I have surrounds for both my Silvers and AL IIIs from SS and the 12 inch ones for the Silvers look right. The 10 inchers don't, just like yours.
I am happy to hear that I can get the Kappa mids repaired. Whats up with the black diaphragm though?

I believe the manufacturer recently instituted a new diversity program.

Yeah I shouldn't have installed them; it's probably going to be a biatch to re-foam with new gummy glue and fresh foam bonded to the cone. eusa_doh.gif  I'm going to order the Cerwin Vega 10" foam; going by the measurements of the driver that Kev sent me looks like it should fit and be a better match to the original foam (although it's the red foam).  We should have a re-foaming party soon to get these speakers rebuilt.
