Hello I am new to the site I have a Carver htr 885.1 and running Klipsch speakers the tall skinny black ones.  Recently while listening to some loud Sammy Hagar my system just shut down.  I assume it overheated.  Now the standby light just flashes.  I tried the 24 hour unplug 3 separate times now and nothing.  Any advice would be great.

Hi Andy. I wish I had answers, but I'm not familiar with Carver receivers, and I am not a tech by any stretch of the imagination. That said, I would probably pull the cover, take a look inside searching for swollen caps, browned or blackened spots on the board(s), or bad connections. It appears that your amp has gone into protection, and something will need to be fixed or replaced to get it out of protection. What that might be I have no idea, unless there is something obvious once the cover is off.

We have the owners manual available for download here:

https://thecarversite.com/manuals/mandir/Carver HTR-885.1 Home Theater Receiver Owners Manual.pdf

We don't have the service manual though.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but maybe someone who's more familiar with this piece will chime in.

Welcome!

No burn or dark marks inside the unit.  Simple touch on all resistors seem solid.  Cleaned the entire unit inside with contact cleaner spray and let it sit for 24 hours afterward.  That was my thought as well.

Welcome to the site @Andy Judd

I was curious if the user manual could shed some light on what the problem with your unit could be.

I have no experience with this unit, and this is only a stab in the dark.

Look at and read "Front Panel Features" Number 1 Power Switch. It indicates that when the Standby LED blinks for 5 seconds its muting and waiting for the power supply to stabilize after which the speaker relays kick in and you will hear music. Something up with the power supply and or relays not working properly?

I would also go to the "IN CASE OF DIFFICULTY PAGE" Kind of implying that something might be up with the speakers.

Wish you well in finding the problem.

I am betting it is the transformer at this point.  Speakers are disconnected.  However not working when hooked up to the backup receiver.  What are the odds of everything getting blown up at once.  My wife will ground me from Sammy Hagar going forward.

So, I always remember the sound of the speaker relays clicking in and I do not hear that now.  So it is likely before the relays or the relays themselves that are bad.

Unfortunately, that's a unit made in China late in Carver's last years. There's no information on them and hardly anyone will service them.

Time for something new, or different.

Welcome, @Andy Judd, glad you found us.

I agree with the sentiment above, that receiver was designed/manufactured well after Bob Carver left Carver Corp.

It might not be worth servicing, as the cost to service it will be higher than the value.  Put the money you would spend to fix it toward the better Carver Gear with Bob Carver's fingerprints on it..., I prefer separates, like a C-1 preamp, a TX-11a tuner, and any of the beloved amps, like the TFM series (TFM-45 comes to mind), or am m series, like a m1.0t, m1.5t, or m4.0t.

If you are dead set on a receiver, the early receivers like the MRX-130 ro MRX-150 or 2000, or later receivers, like an HR742 ro HR 752.

I assume you are using this for two channel stereo listening..., if you are using it for surround, I'd consider something new, with HDMI, like Marantz, or Denon...,

Best for you on your Carver Journey.

Oh, no worries, lots of folks get exposed to Carver on some of the lesser models..., they learn about the potential of the components that Bob Carver had a hand in designing..., and never look back.

Again, glad you found us.

If the relays are not clicking, more than likely the unit is in protection mode and they won't click on. Did you say that you speakers won't work on another backup receiver? If that's the case I wouldn't think it would be the transformer this early in the diagnostic stage. If the speakers won't work then it was probably them that did something to the protection circuit in the receiver.

Any fuses inside of the unit hiding under stuff that might be blown?
