I only have Klipsch RF3-II bipole surrounds right now, but I'm looking to get a pair of rears

PSB alpha. I bought these about 10years ago from a former employer for $80 CDN. His surround receiver shut down trying to drive these in 5.1.:dd . I never had any trouble driving these with the 35 watt rear channels on the HR895.

I voted other, because DCM Time Windows are kinda weird. they have to faces on the front, about 30° off .plane each. THis is where the speakers are mounted - woofers on top. I have them about 95° from the room centerline, with one of the faces pointing striaght into the room, and the other facing into the back of the room.

I love them! :ddd

I use Sonance in-walls, Garrard ceiling mounts w/ Pyle drivers and Carver ALS rears. I want to upgrade the in-walls to a Lineum based speaker.

Bose 301s, they were cheap and they seem to work OK in this application. I spend my money on the front end.

My HT system is rather punk compared to most of yours; I use a matched set of Quest 5.1 aluminium HT speakers with the matching subwoofer.  You can see the fronts and centre between the MLs and the sub way off tot he right side.  Upgrading to an all Polk system later this year.

There's a lot of presumption in the question.  I use no rears at all, though I have a pair of little Carvers here that were designed for that.  I think they were the rear part of a mixed set of five speakers, made in the early 1990's, showing no model number.  They have drivers firing from both sides.  As a rear channel know-nothing, I need help with the jargon. Are they bipolar or dipolar?  Bi and di both mean two, to me.

Depends on if they are firing in phase or not.  If out of phase, they are dipolar, and have a 'null' in their response approx at 90 degrees off axis; that makes them very difficult  to localize (they sound seems quite dispersed) if you point the null to the listening position.

Bipoles are both in phase, to widen the radiation pattern.

When you say out of phase, I guess you mean therear unit's drivers are out of phase within it itself.  Or is it a case ofthe rear channel just being a normal speaker hooked out of phase with the frontchannels?

So disexual would be what?  (Hint: The di prefix is Greek.)

I'm not touching that one with a 10 foot dipole!

Dipole = one driver open on both sides.

Bipole = two drivers firing in opposite directions.

Does that about cover it?

Yes, we are discussing the rear speaker's dispersion pattern here regarding phase.

There are a couple of ways to create a dipole radiation pattern; one way is an open baffle, like the Carver ALS. another way is with two drivers, facing opposited directions, but wired out of phase with each other; that's what the dipole surrounds do.  They have a traditional dipole (figure eight) radiation pattern, and you place them so the null is facing the listening position.

Supposed to result in a more ambient sound with the speaker location not calling attention to itself

I guess that's what these little Carvers are.  They certainly sound diffuse. I just don't care to add ambiance beyond what's in the recording, generally speaking, so I seldom use them.
