Belvedere2 232 Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 I decided to try speaker refoaming this weekend. I bought a pair of Advent Graduates 20 odd years ago. My first "real" stereo system. The last 10 yrs or so they've been sitting in my grandfather's barn. I used to work on my cars there and needed my music. So last weekend I decided to go see if they were still there. Yup but woofer surrounds completely rotted out. Decided to get some surrounds from an ebay company. Easy enough. Took me awhile to clean off the old junk and then apply the new. Waited a day to let em dry and then hooked em up to my Carver gear. Voila! They work! Being easy on the volume knob. Keep the blue lights from jumping. Still surprised with the bass they put out; just a small 2 way design.
sanford lindstrom 35 Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 I refoamed my first pair of speakers a couple of years ago. It was easier than I thought it would be, my results were great. It is fun learning a new skill. This is a project I would have no problem tackling this project again. I am glad you had good results.
Belvedere2 232 Posted March 10, 2013 Author Posted March 10, 2013 Thanks. Now if I could just learn to solder.
zumbini 6,147 Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 Nice job Belvedere2. Got any photos to show us? Before I recapped my M-1.5t's I spent a few weeks practicing my solder skills on an old PCB. Depopulate, repopulate, repeat. Eventually I got pretty good at it.
dennismiller55 4,809 Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 Photos? Where are the photos? Congratulations!
staticvar 56 Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 Thanks. Now if I could just learn to solder. A few years back, i took an evening electronics class at the local technical institute NAIT. It was heavy on solder skills and i just wanted to learn simple point to point soldering. As it turned out, everything was done under stereo microscopes. Resistors the size of pin points. If you sneezed, you'd never find them again...That was the best course i ever took. I'm not afraid to tackle any sort of solder job. I just wish i understood electronics better. I have very basic schematic reading skills and i'm working at getting better at understanding chain of events and mapping. Good luck with the soldering. Keep us posted...
Belvedere2 232 Posted March 11, 2013 Author Posted March 11, 2013 Thanks! I'll get some photos up just have to figure out this digital camera. Used my 35mm for years but this thing is irritating.
Belvedere2 232 Posted March 11, 2013 Author Posted March 11, 2013 I think I'll use a brush next time for the glue.
zumbini 6,147 Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 Thanks for the photos. NOTE: The pix are blurry because the shutter stayed open to compensate for low ambient light. If you don't have a tripod try setting the camera on some books to eliminate movement.
Belvedere2 232 Posted March 11, 2013 Author Posted March 11, 2013 Thanks for the tip. 35mm was so much easier. This camera is nuts! The time and date change all the time.
zumbini 6,147 Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 The 3rd pic looks nice and sharp. What did you do different?
Belvedere2 232 Posted March 11, 2013 Author Posted March 11, 2013 I think I held the camera against me when I shot it; downward angle. I'll have to try the book trick next for long shots.
Odysseous 11 Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 My first re foam job was on a pair of vintage Advents as well! How funny.
weitrhino 1,443 Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 My first (and only) refoam was on a pair of Advent Baby II's. It didn't go well and there's a bit of coil rub. They've never been powered since the refoam, unfortunately. I was so damn careful I don't know what happened. Is there anyone with mad skills who might take on the job for me?
DaveStL 85 Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 When I had my Advents done, the repair guy had an electronic way of measuring them for center, and didn't have to remove the dust caps. I have heard (but not experienced) that that's the only other option to "perfectly" center them.

Send me the woofers, I'll take care of them. If they are shot, I have an extra pair. My next reform job is four AR-93's, there are 8 woofers in all. I've done hundreds, it's kinda fun. A few tips- - Use folded cardboard strips as 'springs' to hold the cone up gently while attaching the surround to the cone. Two to five, depending on the size. - Mark the "up" position before removing from the cabinet, install upside-down when done to counter spider sag. - Use 50/50 white glue and water brushed on dry cones for extra strength. - Use 50/50 black RTV and acetone for that 'wet' look over surrounds like on Snells. - I like 3M Plastic and Emblem Adhesive to bond surrounds. Get it at auto parts stores. 1
Daddyjt 9,585 Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 Ahhh, youth -- I remember lusting over the Advents when I was in my 20s.... Looks good!! Nice job! 1
Belvedere2 232 Posted March 12, 2013 Author Posted March 12, 2013 Ahhh, youth -- I remember lusting over the Advents when I was in my 20s.... Looks good!! Nice job! Thanks! Found myself looking on the 'bay. Always liked the look of their tower models like the Heritage. Almost decided to get some but realized it was just because I was missing my AR-90s. Once they get back from their recap I don't think I'll need an Advent tower.
