Whoa, no need to get testy- you should be having a ball with those speakers! I hope that at least 60% of the time, they work every time.

Oh bummer! Well, hopefully Mark can repost the pics of the "twin coffins" in the truck bed. That was pretty cool!

Welcome to theCarversite, Chris! We can probably help you find another TFM-35. Or three! OCCD is a harsh mistress... -
3.0 lbs... that's $434 per pound. Darn tootin' the shipping *better* be free!

Welcome to the site! You'll have much more access after we learn a little more about you. We also love pictures of gear- any type or brand, with the covers off or on!

There's an awful lot of advice on setting up near-field monitors HERE .

Well, there's the old adage that to find the best speaker position for bass, place it in your listening position, then walk around the room and find the places where the bass sounds best. That's where you locate the speaker.

Welcome to the forum, Jim! Those Wave Touch speakers do look cool!

Welcome, Paul! Don't be embarrassed about how modest you feel your system is. In hi-fi, there is definitely a point of diminishing returns! At the end of the day, the important thing is how *you* like listening to your gear- not how much of it you have or how much you paid for it. Besides, once you're infected with OCCD, you'll *find* a way to get more gear! An M-500t is drool-bait! Please post some pictures!

Welcome, Antonio! What Carver equipment do you have, and what kinds of technical problems?

“A purely subjective reaction to an audio product tells a reader only what that particular reviewer thought of the product when he ‘heard’ it in a given room, with certain associated equipment, at a particular time, and under particular conditions. Such an evaluation is bound to be highly personal and limited in scope.” - Julian Hirsch

FWIW, I'm currently running a single old Velodyne CT-150 powered sub. It's served me well. I'm in the middle of revamping(re-amping?) my entire system, so the Velodyne will be replaced with a pair of subs. I've also picked up a Behringer DSP-1124P to equalize the subs. Suggested reading: The basics of 5.1 and bass management Why two subwoofers are better than one Interesting about the wizardry in Bob's subs, Angelo! One of the most annoying things I've found about having a sub is the constant need for volume adjustment with different source material. Automatic level control/companders sounds like a neat idea!

It is entirely possible for the replacement capacitors to have failed. How *probable* that is depends on the type of capacitors, when they were installed, and how the amp was run since then. If replacing the caps for the main rails doesn't solve your problem, you will probably want to obtain a Variac to begin further troubleshooting. When you get to a point that you're unsure, start a thread in the appropriate forum, and we'll try to help as best we can. And at that point you can also see about getting some local help.

And speaking of places to post, you can run up your count quickly in: What are you listening to right now, and why? You have an extensive music collection, we're always looking for new ideas!

Welcome, shortcake! Favorite? I thought *I* was your new favorite! Don't worry, this site is set up differently, but it does have several redeeming features. Just takes a while to find them all!

Perhaps the faceplate on that M-1.5t was cut down to get rid of the funny look of the factory's rack-mount screw-clearance slots? Best pic I could find. But you see it does look kinda weird outside of a rack (inside of a rack, it's too dark to see anything! ) The first time I saw one like this was an Ebay listing, the seller thought it was a very nice custom job. But later, I saw a factory photo (ad, brochure, spec sheet?) that showed the same slots. Probably early production, and the slots were dropped before the "One Thousand Two Hundred" screening was.

Welcome! Nice score with the clean amp. Lucky that you have an identical, working amp to use as a reference, that can help a lot when troubleshooting. Good luck!

What if you got some small-medium speakers, but let her decorate them any way she wants? She could paint them pink, cover them with rhinestones or seashells, wallpaper the cabinets, pick new fabric for the grills, screw shelves to the sides, or even cut alcoves into them? Perhaps she would see them as her new project? Just close your eyes and enjoy the music!

FWIW, I noticed in the service manuals for the TFM-75 and the PT1800/2400, in the "Packing" parts list, they include "Envelope, Hologram Test Disk". Did Carver Professional give away Sonic Holography CD's with their pro amps? Were there any Pro products that even used SH? Or were they just using an overstock of those SH CD envelopes as *generic* envelopes, for the warranty card or something? Anybody still have the cards or envelope that originally came with their amp?

What speakers would best match with a Carver M-500t Amp?
fill35U replied to chiroacademy's topic in Loudspeakers
Thanks for the correction, Schurkey! However, that appears to be a hotly debated technicality. Definitely food for thought... All my speakers are suspended at the moment, so I haven't done much with spikes lately. But I think we can all agree that spikes can easily make a noticeable sonic difference! -
What speakers would best match with a Carver M-500t Amp?
fill35U replied to chiroacademy's topic in Loudspeakers
Wow, good catch, Dom! I never would have thought to ask! In the same vein, have you tried experimenting with the aiming of the rear tweeters on your VR3's? VSA, by their business model, seems incredibly supportive of their customers. Have you tried contacting them directly, for tuning and upgrade suggestions? I bet they would be happy to mail you a manual and some brochures, even if you're a second-hand owner. "What sand is best?" appears to be a very common question. I don't have any experience with these, or any other sand filled speakers. But if they were mine, here's what I would think about: 1. Try to find the best room location first. Moving them *after* they are full of sand could get messy and heavy! 2. Fill only one at a time. Then compare right vs. left to see which sounds better, sand or no sand. Also listen with your back to them, I know *my* ears have very different response curves between left and right(blame the guns and cars). 3. Fill them gradually, stopping to see how the sound changes. Perhaps they'll sound best half-full? Get a hose, a funnel, and a buddy to pour sand while he is off to the side, so his body is as far from the radiation pattern as possible. Close your eyes and listen for a change as the sand goes in. 4. Try fillers besides sand. Table salt is significantly denser, but still cheap. Baking soda is finer (might pack denser). Lead shot is of course much denser, but relatively expensive (but cheaper than the speakers!). I'd suggest #12 birdshot (aka "dust"). If you wanted to get crazy, you could go with a tungsten alloy, very roughly 50% denser than lead... Or a mix of grain sizes and materials. 5. Don't forget the feet! Spikes will help decouple them from the floor (and make it easier to vacuum the sand from under them). Hope that helps! Please let us know your results!
