  1. Srinath- Like RobertR, I would be *very* interested in your progress if you achieved a working upgrade/redesign for these ribbons. FWIW, I've spent a few months now researching DIY ribbon drivers. IMO it would be false economy to replace/upgrade magnets in an existing ribbon driver instead of starting from scratch. And you'd be saddled with multiple serious unknowns that driver/speaker manufacturers have the experience and tools to identify and deal with. I think DIY drivers, or even speakers from existing drivers, can be fun and highly educational. I don't think that generally they'll save you money or produce better results than finished commercial designs, unless you're really good or lucky. Subwoofers or limited-range surrounds excepted... full-range speakers are a nightmare! There's also the issue of originality. Replacing speakers, drivers (or critical parts like magnets or ribbons) with different types is going to have more sonic consequences than just about anything else you could do to your system. Better or worse, the sound will almost certainly be significantly *different*. If that's the goal or is merely acceptable, fine. But I for one would require an awful lot of test data from a reputable third party before I believed that a serious design/construction change improved reliability *and* was at least neutral to the sound. I'm not saying it's impossible, but hats off to you, sir, if you can pull it off!

  3. Lol, you know I'm jealous, Paul! Everybody else has big Infinity's coming out of the woodwork, and they're scarce near me... With all the skilled and experienced refoamers on this site, I'm sure they'll help you get those woofers straight in no time!
  4. Wow, congratulations! I've been thinking about getting some 6.x's, your story gives me hope. Good luck on the rest of the restoration!
  5. Thanks, Mark! My gf is a huge James Bond fan- she already had the entire collection of movies (including "Never Say Never Again" ) when I met her. She'll love this!
  6. Cool gear! You made out like a bandit!
  7. Pink Floyd's "Delicate Sound of Thunder". I like to see if it conveys the ambiance of a live concert. Telarc's "Sampler Volume 3". Includes Also Sprach Zarathustra, synthesized organs, gunshots on the Banditen Gallop, lots of orchestral music, male and female solo vocals, and the Beach Boys. Classic James Taylor, and Dire Strait's "On the Night" live album for male vocals. The soundtrack from "Spawn" for handling high volume without distortion.
  8. Didn't Speakerlab make plans for/copies of the Klipschorns as well?
  9. I've never seen or heard them. But they're supposed to be big, heavy, well-made, and *rare*. Nice find, Mike! Note to mods: should this thread be moved?
  10. Nice catch on the PM-175, Don! No fan on her to become distracting. She looks to be in great cosmetic shape- and she's got her handles, too! Funny, I've never heard a speaker described as needing *less* power. Seems they all sound better with lots of headroom. Good luck with your other repairs!
  11. Those "lesser Infinities" are interesting, I may have to find a pair for myself. Thanks!
  12. SB-7070?
  13. Nice score, Mike! Isn't there supposed to be foam on the surface the mid sits on, to control reflections?
  14. Congratulations, Mark! Keep those great posts coming!
  15. Welcome to theCarversite, Ben! That looks like a really comfy HT/listening room! I love the posters. And awesome collection of Laserdisc players and media!
  16. And of the inside:
  17. Here are the pics JakeM sent me of his new CT-17:
  18. Congratulations on your new CT-17! Kve777 is our remotes guru. You might want to drop him a line and see if he can help.
  19. I don't want anyone to think that I feel that KG4's are inadequately designed, poorly made, inherently susceptible to damage by any particular amp, or not worth the risk even if they were! The owner in my story had been driving them with a Carver receiver, and continued to do so after they were repaired. They sounded amazing to me, before and after, at least in that very bright room. And I've never been able to figure out a completely adequate explanation for the incident. So if you find you like them, don't be afraid- go for it!
  20. FWIW, here's a story I have about KG4 speakers: KG4's trounced by a TFM-45
  21. Youre welcome, Dan! Thanks for the info! I meant, "I don't know about {where to find for cheap} those Jupiter caps". Beeswax is much more expensive than paraffins or vegetable waxes. The cap packaging is an unusual shape. They require vacuum impregnation to survive long. Even then, they are only rated to 70°C, so other concessions must be made to help keep losses and operatibg temperature down. The leads are solid silver? Then they are "cryo treated", although I can't imagine why. They have no commercial application outside of a tiny, tiny niche market. And they are priced by prestige, not actual specifications. Why *wouldn't* you pay a fortune for them? Since it's for a restoration, using high-end caps should add extra to the price/value of the speakers. And knowing that you put the very best into a project is priceless! Where does your crossover designer friend get his from? He must buy in bulk, maybe he can get you a couple at a discount?
  22. I don't know about those Jupiter caps. But if you want very tough, flat, and affordable caps that should sound pretty good, check these out: WIMA 2.2uF 180VAC PP cap at Mouser.com Kemet 2.2uF 220VAC PP cap at Mouser.com
  23. Shouldn't they be different? L is low frequency and the other is not R but Hi frequency...? "L" is the symbol for inductance, "R" is the symbol for resistance. Nothing inherently to do with high or low frequencies, depends how they are used. Please forgive me if I'm misreading your question!
  24. The 3mH has an "iron" core, denoted by the parallel lines over it. The 1mH is an air core (no lines). The iron core one will have more nonlinearities and could saturate, giving distinct sound qualities. Resistance or power handling obviously isn't much of an issue for the 1mH, so it doesn't need a core.
