  1. Hello and welcome from a neighbor across the lake. Love those old Maggies...nice rig
  2. I'd throw in Jim Keltner and Manu Katche as being pretty decent with the sticks. [everyone knows NP is the best]
  3. What, no Phil Collins?! (lol) Everyone knows it's Peart.
  4. I don't know anything about Kappa 9's, but there's a pair popped up for sale here on the Asylum, FYI. Go get, you scurrilous fiends and blaggards ...
  5. Right now is Liverpool vs Man City in the EPL. After which the TV goes off and the tunes go on..
  6. I'm not good at these 'your favorite' threads, particularly with music, as stuff comes and goes. But probably the most 'influential', in the sense of being heavily played during various phases of my life, to the extent that they're ingrained in my memory deeper than other options; and even though I may not play each of them too often nowadays; and in no particular order: DSOTM A Farewell To Kings A Trick of The Tail Selling England By the Pound Benefit A Night At The Opera Ariel (Kate Bush) Neighbourhood - Manu Katche Talking Timbuktu - Ali Farke Toure 2112 The Works ELP Animals PF Solid Air - John Martyn Bryter Layter - Nick Drake Stormwatch - Jethro Tull Queen II Love Over Gold - Dire Straits Trinity Sessions - Cowboy Junkies Desolation Boulevard - Sweet Pagan Place - The Waterboys Keep in mind if I took the test again tomorrow, at least 3 or 4 would probably change
  7. I didn't have to think about this for more than 2 seconds.... "Time" Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day Fritter and waste the hours in an off-hand way Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town Waiting for someone or something to show you the way Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today And then one day you find ten years have got behind you No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking Racing around to come up behind you again The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older Shorter of breath and one day closer to death Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way The time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say Home, home again I like to be here when I can When I come home cold and tired It's good to warm my bones beside the fire Far away, across the field The tolling of the iron bell Calls the faithful to their knees To hear the softly spoken magic spell
  8. Ciao Antonio! Welcome from sunny Wisconsin USA! dac
  9. Thanks, I enjoyed the little poke with a stick. But I'll pass anyway. As the only person who cooks in my humble abode, I spend enough time in the kitchen as it is. So I say NO to instant coffee, NO to auto TT's, but YES to remote controls and YES to semi-automatic record cleaners!! I also say - hey, dude, whatever works for you is fine with me
  10. In the same price ball-park as the Parts Express kit you could have a REL sub, like this one here http://app.audiogon.com/listings/subwoofers-rel-acoustics-storm-mkiii-in-natural-wood-finish-2014-02-25-home-theater-07069-watchung-nj REL make a quality product, they're designed to blend as near seamlessly as possible in high-end music applications. The one above ought to perform well.
  11. A buddy let me borrow his Vpi 16.5 around the Holidays, and it's not going back. He claimed he never used it. So 'use it or lose it' is what I told him. If he reclaims it I'll have to drop $$ on a new one, like this http://shop.generubinaudio.com/VPI-HW165-LP-Record-Cleaning-Machine-846541351969.htm There's no way I'm going back to manual cleaning. Sinx is fer feckin pots 'n pans not rekerds! About a year or so or go I snagged a 700 piece collection from a dude on Craiglist. I can't imagine having to go through and clean every one of those manually. And clean-before-play gets a bit old when you have to wash the dishes first Pony up, it's worth the bananas.
  12. Nice catch! Gotta love Craigslist.... Positioning can be a bear with dipoles but it's worth playing with. There's often a spot where everything just comes together and snaps into focus. Just try to give them some room from the front wall, 36" or more is preferable if you can. Try tweeters inside and outside and see which fits your liking. I always preferred my 3.6's with ribbons on the inside. Messing with toe-in make a big difference too. With toe-in, you'll be juggling warmth with stage width and precision of image placement. Go too far one way and they start to sound lean. Go too far another way and the stage gets wider but you loose image specificity (vague/blurred lines between instruments and performers). If you don't have the space to bring them into the room more, you can try some simple things to diffuse the rear wave. Enjoy those buggers!
  13. Hey, Thanks for the welcome(s)! I've been an audio nut for 35 years, been through many system rebuilds, even quit the hobby for a couple years not so long back. I've participated in a few forums here and there, wrote reviews for PFO for a while, got involved starting an audio club in WI and just basically had lots of fun dabbling with all things audio. My first experience with Carver products was finding a CT7 in a CD exchange store about 10 years ago, and I've used that in various systems and 2nd systems ever since. As an owner of Apogee Caliper Sigs and Maggie 3.6's, I was quite smitten the first time I heard the Carver Amazings, and had to have a pair. I've been the proud owner of hybrid plats (originals with the 60" ribbon kit) for a little over a year now, and love them! Listen to a wide range of music - classic rock, some jazz, big band / dixie, etc etc. Here's a quick pic of the system..... The above was taken before getting back into vinyl after a 15 year hiatus...here's the TT Anyway, looking forward to posting when I can. . DAC
  14. Howdy all. Feeling good today, 6 degrees outside, minus whatever with the windchill, 7" snow in the forecast, driveway blocked, fridge full, system warmed up, Plats standing to attention and ready to rock and roll..... Hope y'all don't mind my first post being about nothing! DAC
