  1. Funny that this thread would start here is me today just picking up a pair of Plats (ones)
  2. Usually it says MK-I or II etc on the same sticker that has the serial numbers on the back below the woofer dust covers. Usually Plats that have the Dual Binding posts are Either MK I or II's. But I have seen or heard of people with III's that had the biamp posts also, I have MK-III's that do not have the dual posts but have the tuning pots that the MK-IV's have. MK-IV's are considered the best because they had the last version of the factory X-Overs so they where Bobs last tweaking of the sound of the speakers. There are not enough of the Amazing Platinum left around in good shape to really be picky and wait for the IV series when I nice pair that have the 60" ribbons show up you buy them and tweak them if you simply must have the MK-IV series. There are even some Hybrids that have 60" ribbons but have the larger non paper woofers and a different x-over than all of them.
  3. Just for the record I love the 48" and 60" ribbons! I only wrote that as a warning that you have to be all in if you pick up the Carvers. Once you get a set in a room set right and with the right amp they will make your jaw drop. And that pair of Amazings with 60" ribbons I posted that where for sale at $600 bucks I bet they would go $500 and they are closed now also because of the lockdown, but in a few weeks they may go $200 who knows.
  4. My theory since 2018 on all the ribbons new in a box NOS to in use daily is that glues after time (20 years plus) will turn brittle and the magnets if given enough of a bump or flex will fly into ribbons. I have had these apart and some of the glue will be holding just fine and strong and it takes me a lot of effort to remove them, then I will get to some and they take only the amount of effort to over power the magnetism to the steel frames. If one does buy some of these you really need to put extra effort (2 guys) and move slow and even, no impacts really treat them like nitroglycerine

IR_2260.jpg Flir e60 camera. Amps are being used pretty hard and the temps stay low even the sunfire sub woofer is working harder and it isn't doing much compared to the 600's

carver ribbon pics old vs. new

A couple pictures of then and now, one pic looks like a ribbon jig but I had heard they where electric over hydraulic presses maybe that was for clamping the magnets together? The other pic (look at all that ribbon materiel) but it just has 2 traces not 4 I think it was the modern unit for the sunfire speakers that wrapped them in a circle.
  13. Pic 1 is bob at a training session for Sunfire to introduce the new Sunfire speakers and compare them to the old plats in the picture, behind him is supposed to be 2 sunfire 600 amps for the power in the comparison but only one has the signature so I think they ran the plats on the 600 and the sunfires on a 300x2. And I sure hope they moved them off the wall for the comparison lol
  14. You can really only buy the 600 series amp and have or do the mod or buy 2 series 300 amps and do the mod or buy the 400x7 signature amps and do the mod plus cable it to use all the power into 2 channel. They are not all the same amp under the hood.. I myself have been looking for some sinsi speakers to drive with my 2 x 600 sunfire signatures but am still looking for some. And to put it in perspective a few months ago there where several 600x2 and 625 x2 signature amps on ebay that shrunk down in price to around $1500 so they are not that rare or expensive since jkid stopped driving up the price of them on ebay.

    Pandora vs. Spotify

Only thing I do not like on spotify is one day you may listen to a song but a week later that song will be grayed out because it is no longer under license, and it happens a lot. Even if you check the save/download of the song.
  16. no there are options now thanks to Sea read the above posts and links. http://thecarversite.com/yetanotherforum/default.aspx?g=posts&t=28126
  17. I decided this week end to give my silvers a serious work out just to see what they could take, mine are bi amped with a 600 signature driving the ribbons and a 600 driving the woofers and I actually saw the ashly crossover clip warning light flicker at 14 on the volume. Volume is 100 back to 0 on the sunfire pre. It was pretty darn loud.
  18. The ribbons have daughter boards at the bottom and can either get loose or wear through the trace, use a multimeter to check.
  19. Grew up on Zep! I do not know why but I Love anything on the 2nd to the last album, In through the Out Door. If I had to pick one off of it then Fool In The Rain
