  1. Same here. That karma got me searching the oppo web site to figure out if my BDP-95 will even play Blu-ray audio. I can't find any mention of that term on the Oppo site. Anybody know which Oppo players support this? I sent a question into Oppo, but no response yet. Oh, and thanks for the inspiration Daddyjt......

    It's Here !!!

Received mine. Hat's off for a job well done. Both disc's work fine for me.
  3. I saw the dome in one of the photos, but couldn't see it in the others. Looks pretty bad and should have shown up in the others. I like the size of the 7's - mostly because they will fit in my car for the trek back to California. Many thanks for all the offers. Hmmm. Kappa 6's?? Let me do some research.
  4. I'm once again making the trek to Phoenix for a visit. Lately I've been interested in picking up a pair of Infinity speakers - mostly because I've never heard a set before. Searching through craigslist, I found these. http://phoenix.craigslist.org/wvl/ele/4742751183.html Any thoughts on how to easily test/inspect the tweeters and mid range? Price seems fair if everything is intact.
  5. Thumbs up here too. Every cut is a surprise. You think you've heard CSN&Y? Listen to this. Recorded in an era when a live performance meant live and new. Not note for note duplication of the album.
  6. How does it sound?

    Magnepan 1.6/QR

Looks like I'll be staying out of trouble this weekend. Pushing the 1.6's around the room. Looking for that perfect demo cut. Swapping preamps. Life's tough. Thanks to all for the suggestions.
  8. I seem to have developed a "bucket list" of components I would like to try. Recently a set of Magnepan speakers have been at the top of the list. With expert advise from Steve Ford and SLbenz, I narrowed my search for reliable and affordable maggies to the 1.6. Patience was recently rewarded on craigslist when a pair came up for sale. I controlled my enthusiasm for several days since the price was higher than I wanted to pay. Magnepan's seem to move slowly, if a all around here. I then made a low, but fair offer. I picked them up on Sunday. They are immaculate. I set them up with my M-1.0t MK II, my C-1 with the Billd mods and a squeezebox. They sound magnificent. Majestic, ethereal, detailed are all words that come to mind. Interestingly they seem to sound just as good at low volumes as they do when shaking the house. They are missing the extremely low bottom end, so I swiped the Velodyne ULD-15 from my main system. Wow. I'm still struggling a bit with the sound stage though. The room they are in is way less than optimal. I can seem to dial in their placement to give the sound stage the Magnepan's are known for. I'll continue experimenting and if successful, the Thiels in the main system may become available.
  9. I had a pm1.5 a while back with replacement caps installed backwards! Laugh if you will, but the negative side of the low and mid rail supplies were both backwards. Both caps had vented and the amp was going in and out of protection. The amp suffered from a multitude of other problems as well. It's a hard life on the road. You mention the amp is clicking. That usually means the amp has detected a problem (the service manual says which ones) and is going into protection. Basically turning itself off. After sitting for a few moments turned off, it forgets there is a problem and turns itself back on only to discover the problem didn't go away. It then turns itself off again. The clicking you hear is the mag coil energizing and denergizing. Your voltage measurements will be unstable when this is happening. You may get lucky replacing the caps, but if not you will need a variac to diagnose your problem.
  10. Welcome. The service manual for the PM1.5 is available here. It has an excellent troubleshooting section and rather thoroughly explains how the amp works. It is well worth saving. The primary suspects would be the dual can caps hiding underneath the input board. They are a known weak point. A kit is available from Les to replace them with standard caps. However, it well worth a few tests to confirm the problem rather than just swapping caps and hoping for the best. Many PM amps have led a hard life and suffer from multiple problems. Be careful poking around inside the amp. The big caps can remain charged for quite some time and will damage you or other amp components if you stick a probe crosswise - even with the power OFF. And speaking of OFF, unplug it, don't just turn it off when working on it. Much of the power supply remains energized even with the switch in the OFF position.
  11. slbenz - Thanks for the very generous offer -- I'm going to continue my hunt for a set I can purchase. Hopefully something reasonable pops up soon. Thanks again.
  12. Yup. But I'm only looking for a temporary hookup. Sample, enjoy and then move it on. You're local (to me anyway). The MMG's are in Carmel. $100 for the pair, but they rattle. In addition, there are a pair of MG-1 and MG-2a in down town SF for $200. Owner claims the MG-1's are good, the MG-2a's are rough. What do you think?
  13. OK. I've got the bug for some Magnepan's. On the hunt right now. Any suggestions on which model might be good target? The 1.7's seem pricy for my experiment. There's a pair of MMG's not far away with a rattle for $100. There also seem to be a lot of MG-I and MG-2's around for real cheap.
  14. Thanks for the advise. I sent the DQ-10s off to a new home primarily because of limited "sweet spot". Good sound, but don't move your head even a little. Now I'm looking at used Magnepan's. Wow. Old ones are cheap, but apparently prone to problems. Further, even if you find a pair that don't rattle, it's likely just a matter of time (or enthusiastic volume) until the glue comes loose. Maybe I'll go back to hunting Carver gear.
  15. Lately my interests have shifted somewhat to speakers. I've been using the local Craigslist to hunt down, capture and later set free interesting speakers. I usually break even, sometimes make a few bucks and sometimes lose a few. Polk SDA's, Carver AL III's and most recently some Dahlquist DQ-10's. I finally found a new home for the DQ-10's and have been on the hunt for some electrostatics. I found a pair of Martin Logan Ascent i speakers for a reasonable price. They have the curved electrostatic panels and a 10 inch aluminum woofer. Any opinions here on what they sound like. They are a bit more expensive that my usual prey so I'm being more careful that usual. Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks.
