Yup, I got my fathers 76 chevy 4wd 400 auto Scottsdale pickup with 53k miles on it in back of the house, rotting away after many years of good occasional use. It now needs work which I can do, but I would never use it that much to justify the effort, if done "Might" get me 12-16k. I've had the "I'll take it off your hands" or I'll do it for 8k offers, and had to restrain myself from getting the backhoe out for the offeror. I tell them that I'm running out of room in the back yard. It's a difficult, painful, and frustrating decision to issue that "DNR" order, but it's taken a while for me to realize it's time Anyone with old girlfriend/spouse versus new girlfriend/spouse analogies? No blame meant. Thanks was intended. Just my frustration after all the research and requests over the last three years for a C1/C11 refresh, I give up. There seems to have been some good baselines for a refresh, but then after reading all the changes and differing opinions/arguments, I gave up. I still have the amps which were rebuilt as a result of the good knowledge and experience from this website, and will continue to "proudly" use them. The preamps are still operational at some unknown subjective level of degraded performance and will continue to be used in the short term. I have the ability and equipment to do any of this work, but choose at this time to leave it to an established business with experts who may still be doing this work, for which I haven't found many, other than the one quoted, for the preamps. This thread can be used as a reference for anyone else looking to have a C1 or C11 rebuilt/refreshed in the future. The Emotiva XSP-1 seems to be a unique option, other than the C1 and C11 to me, to extend the use of the good two channel systems shown on this site for home theater use.

Thanks for the offer to take a C11 off my hands. I certainly wouldn’t want to put 650 into a 150 preamp that would still be a 150 preamp. Your offer has however conjured up an alternative use. At my range we have egg shoots. That’s shooting at egg shaped profiles on paper with a one inch shoot-n-see in the middle at 100 yards. Ties are broken with a shoot-off of five tootsie rolls standing upright. This new idea would involve a schematic with a grab bag of locations and points based on the size of the components, for a circuit reflow shoot. Those little carbon resistor buggers would fetch the most points! You get the idea. Thanks for getting me all excited! I’m just trying to figure out if we do the faceplate first or last. I love shooting bugs off targets at 100 yards!

I had a 69 GTO convertible I bought for $750 with 50k miles in 76. The guy couldn't stop getting tickets, no matter what color he kept changing it to. I left one patch in reverse, then four patches in gear changes when trying it out. Since there are many variables that result in a performance judgement, the variables for my studio playback system are specific to that system. A neutral non DSP pre-amp that does not have to tweak or influence any input or output or environment factors. No headphone or phono requirements. I have other systems for those. The classes of circuit families and their characteristics have been kicked around for many years. And now due to popular choices, are mostly being made in China. The C1 & C11 work for now, but shall be replaced with something like a Gen 2 Emotiva XSP-1. My custom system integration and major pro-audio sources say that these types of endeavors represent less than 2% of the consumer market. And now as we and our old components age, that percentage will not be increasing. Kind of like the old boat owner scenario of throwing time & money into the water, if you have the time and/or money. Get the wife's opinion on that, but be prepared to duck My fear with all the upgrade/refresh options, discussions and arguments, has been related to catching an "STD" (Stereophoniclly Transmitted Distortion) in my system! The driver that picked up the unit for return said that they are having a nationwide problem with their non-union crane operators dropping shipments up to six feet. This may be good for sales and replacements, but not good for everyone else. One thing I check in my business is shipping requirements and instructions. In this case, the simple use of a drop indicator used inside and/or outside of a sealed box would indicate a destructive drop. The ULine link shows some examples that would only add $4 to $6 per box. In my case the magnet weight caused the magnet to shear off and spider to break. I can ask the dealer to add an indicator, but would need to know what "G" force indicator to add.

I use one amp for the R & L tweeters, another amp the the R & L high mids, and so one. Each speaker has it's db level set independently with the RTA in db meter mode. The crossover allows all other speakers to be muted. When all drivers are set at an equal db level then the EQ is set, with the RTA in octave analysis mode, for each speaker, then each tower, then at money/single malt seat. Of course, this is all done while the wife is at work!!!

Try adding an external crossover (Ashly 4001), EQ (dbx 2215), and an RTA (Parts Express 390-800). Disconnect the internal crossovers and drive the drivers individually or by level. You have enough amps to drive your speaker levels individually with the best amp for each job. Then tune the system and set the sound/response profile to the room and your preference with the RTA's db meter function for each speaker, then EQ with the octave analysis function to set/level the profile. Look at your drivers and enclosure design volumes and port size to determine the type of damping, using online box design apps, they provide which can only be influenced by the crossovers damping setting. Choose the amp which has the necessary damping factor. Tweeters and high mids do not require a high damping factor, whereas low mids and subs require a high damping factor.

Take a look at my system under users systems Massastan's system. I selected my amps based on reputation and damping factor (see the damping factor link). The system was designed as a 6db studio quality (west coast) sound profile, and not a 2-4db east coast hi-fi or euro sounding system. I have old receivers and JBL S312's, and others (OCD) for hi-fi. I do not rely on snake oil filled mundorf capacitors in the enclosure crossovers to make up for a lack of an amps damping factor or driver profile. I find a RTA a must for system balancing and EQ. Stop by for a listen when you’re in my area. DSD music files sound amazing on my system. I also like having two ten inch low mids which contribute about 80% of the audio sound spectrum, see online charts. It's not for everyone, but I took care of what I need by putting more into design vs money, although it's not a low cost option, just reasonable.

Someday....there will be the home stereo equivalent of a guitar sampling amps 200+ "voices" and/or a profile library to load into your 24 or 32bit DSP EQ and/or Crossover. The EQ's and Crossovers are available now, but your would need to know how to set all the parameters to get the desired effect or profile. And then of course, an additional offset table for our hearing test results. With or without the Single Malt effect?

One CD I like for the range of instruments and sounds is Gotye - Like Drawing Blood. If your system can resolve sub sonic rumbles and a full range of other sounds like clanks, try it. I also have the Telearc SACD's and a pipe organ Cybele SACD 030.802. I have a couple of 24bit 192hz Blue Coast tracks that are tremendous. The pipe organ has the widest frequency response range of any instrument. I attribute the ability to resolve subtle details to my systems configuration. Check the member systems for my system configuration. Having two 10" low mids in series, represents the majority of the sound contribution. Most of my music files are FLAC (25-50mb) and DSD64 & 128 (150-250mb) being fed to my analogue rack by an OPPO 105D with 32bit DAC. The Blue Coast site has a link to a high definition audio database that lists hardware and music providers with their formats and number of selections.
