I didn't get it at the time, but that was the point my dad was trying to instill in me. Hey Bill, aren't you supposed to be in bed, recovering from pneumonia?

My dad often quoted from this poem and I find myself doing the same to my son on occasion. If by Rudyard Kipling If you can keep you head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you. If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,\ Or being hated, don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream - and not make dreams your master; If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat these two imposters just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build ‘em up with worn-out tools: If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’ If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, And - which is more - you’ll be a Man, my son!

  6. I've been a huge Santana fan since I saw the band during the Abraxas tour in 1970 (I think). 40 years later Carlos is still going strong. What's better than Carlos? How 'bout Carlos and Eric Clapton!
  7. I saw Little Feat twice at Alpine Valley in WI and three times at various venues in Chicago in the mid to late 70's and early 80's. The only folks who managed to sit through any of those concerts were confined to wheelchairs. I rank those shows with Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon concerts (in Phoenix and Chicago in 1973) and Led Zeppelin's stadium busters in 1969, 1970, 1972 and 1974.
  8. Just about anything by Little Feat. No one sits through a Little Feat concert!

Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted. Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955)
  10. Looking good David! Certainly a big improvement over your before photos. By the way, your cabinets are made from MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard). (At least that's what we call here in the states. I think across the pond they call it engineered wood.) It's chunks of wood bound together with adhesive, and formed into sheets under pressure. The result is very dense which is good for absorbing vibrations. Not so good for pretty exteriors. It's general covered with some kind of laminate to dress it up.
  11. Good luck with your project David.
  12. That is a wonderful article written about a very technical process in terms simple enough for a layman to understand. Considering all the compromises that must be made due to inherent process limitations, it's freaking amazing that well engineered vinyl records can sound as good as they do!

Cool beans! Everybody loves new toys.
  14. SteveFord is spot on about the GK-55's pedigree. The only thing I can add is Gibson made them in 79/80 and they were built out of "spare parts". The story I heard was that Gibson was close to bankruptcy at the time and had zero credit. Since their vendors would only take cash they hatched a plan to use what was available. I'm not sure if that's really true but it's a great story! Here is a better picture:
  15. I don't use a program though with over 5,000 "pieces" I probably should. (At my age ones memory changes from a steel cage to a plastic colander...) Currently most of my vinyl and tape collections are stored away . Everything readily available is stored in racks, alphabetically, by genre. Here are some really bad photos of my collection:
  16. Thanks for the warm welcome gents. Nice to see familiar "faces" (BillD, TNRabbit). Yes, I shudder at the thought of having to move all my toys, again. Hopefully that will not be necessary but I'd never leave them behind. I still have all the original equipment boxes and packaging just in case, but the real hassle is not packing but reorganizing everything after the move.
  17. Howdy folks. This looked like a good topic to jump in to so here goes. I'm new to this forum but I've been collecting (and playing) music since the mid 60's. There is a gap in my collection from the early 90's to the mid 00's after I "settled down". (Translation: I got married, started a family and had much less "disposable" income.) Anyway my music collection consists of (roughly estimated): Vinyl: 2,500 LPs, 300 78s (mostly old jazz) and 200 45s (mostly 60's rock) Tape: 200 open reels, 500 cassettes and 200 8-tracks (all of the 8-tracks are playable!) Digital: 50 DATs, 1,500 CDs and 150 music DVDs Here are some really bad photos of part of my collection. (One of these days I'll have to borrow some flood lights and do it right..) My MFSL and 1/2 speed masters are at the bottom of the equipment rack. (The rest of my vinyl is packed away as is most of my tape collection.) That's a Marshall 8100 1/2 stack with my Gibson GK-55 in the far right corner. The opposite wall is covered floor-to-ceiling, end-to-end with solid oak bookcases. I use them to store books, photo albums, video tapes (VHS and Beta) and DVD's. What do you think?
