trav0810 588 Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 Thanks to AndrewJohn, I have a soldering iron on the way! So, I am going to attempt my first crossover repair. It is the extremely advanced and complicated Polk Audio Monitor 5a crossover. 2 caps and 2 resistors per crossover. That's right gents, I am a risk taker! I'm not going to spend a fortune on these. I'm not a big believer in the extra money for TOTL caps and resistors. I figure any new. in spec caps HAVE to be better than the 25 year old caps that are in there, right?
dennismiller55 4,824 Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 You've got this Travis. No problem.
Daddyjt 9,873 Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 We all gotta start somewhere ;-) We're here if you need help!
B-Man 4,784 Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 You'll be putting the mkII treatment to amps in no time Travis !!!
trav0810 588 Posted January 22, 2015 Author Posted January 22, 2015 You'll be putting the mkII treatment to amps in no time Travis !!! Bwahahahahaha! I'll more than likely burn the house down first!
trav0810 588 Posted January 22, 2015 Author Posted January 22, 2015 I've been browsing sites. Even the "cheaper" Poly caps aren't really cheap!
oldtexasdog 2,495 Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 All caps and resistors are not created equal. While you don't want to go crazy on your first run at it at least get the ones that are specs, at 1% so you wont have a lot of variance.

Most of the Poly caps I have looked at were 3-5% and the Electrolytic were 6%
oldtexasdog 2,495 Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 Get a couple of them then and take some measurements and put in the best matched pairs. Many sellers will have a set of matched pairs for just this type of project. One example. trav0810 588 Posted January 26, 2015 Author Posted January 26, 2015 I'm removing a 6.2ohm resistor, can I replace it with a 6.5?
fill35U 1,848 Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 I doubt you'd hear a mere 5% difference. Many power resistors have a 10% tolerance anyhow. If it bugs you, a 2.7 in series with a 3.3 would get you 6.0, a little closer. And each could be half the wattage of the original 6.2 . Kinda hard to know which way to err unless you knew how the designer decided on the original value.
