davidc 365 Posted May 2, 2021 Posted May 2, 2021 Yes, these were the original top of the line from him. Updated to the similar Super Tower III. People look at these and are shocked at the quality sound they produced. Most of the editors at Stereophile and The Absolute Sound thought that they were some of the best sounding speakers they had ever heard. As time went on, Brian incorporated true ribbons for the midrange on up. But he never gave up on making sure his speakers had the best base. On our forum, allflehisequalwhenburnt has these. (sorry, not sure how to make it a link) and I have the next model down...the Super Tower) 2
4krow 6,516 Posted May 2, 2021 Posted May 2, 2021 I get the idea to get ALL the bass you want from speakers, as you mentioned in a previous post, and Not needing a sub for the challenge. BUT a sub does offer some advantages for placement. Even better, I have found less distortion on loud passages even if the sub is set at a low freq. In my case, I wish that I had done it years ago. 1

Yes, I was actually going to start up this question again, as I've purchased two VMPS "Original Subwoofers", which are 12" drivers with 15" passive radiators. I was researching were to place them, and exactly how I should run them as part of the home theater, and as part of the two channel music reproduction with the same system. I 've been watching some video's of this with Audioholics. 2
4krow 6,516 Posted May 2, 2021 Posted May 2, 2021 Good! One other aspect that I like a lot is the ability to adjust the sub, not only in volume but phase, freq, and in my case, I have used a Velodyne SMS-1 unit that measures the room and sub response and adjusts as much as possible for the best performance. That is a deciding factor for me since this is one of less desirable listening room environments that I have lived in. 1 1

Yes, I plan on using the AVR's Audyseey function for EQing, but I know I'll still have to find the right placement for the subs. It seems weird calling them subs when they are actually smaller than my main speakers. 1
davidc 365 Posted May 2, 2021 Posted May 2, 2021 Here's a set of the latest and one of the best VMPS speakers for sale, including what is probably one of the very best center channel speakers ever made: https://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=122314.msg1856189#msg1856189 The RM40 won the 2002 CES Best Speaker in Show award: http://pointillistic.com/vmps-audio/RM40.htm They were something like $6000 a pair, and the LRC center channel speaker was over $1000. Here's and interesting article he wrote about the ridiculous pricing of high end speakers: https://www.audaud.com/audaud/JAN01/cheney.html Reviews of his various speakers: http://pointillistic.com/vmps-audio/reviews.htm Technical FAQ: http://pointillistic.com/vmps-audio/technical.htm http://pointillistic.com/vmps-audio/faq.htm Photo Gallery: https://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=41748.0 Price list: http://pointillistic.com/vmps-audio/pricing.htm Obviously I'm a fan. LOL In short, they can take as much power as you can throw at them, and I don't think I've ever heard of anybody being dissatisfied with any of his speakers. 1 1

If not, not sure what size may be two big, or what your budget is. Never to late and no, I haven't found those speakers I have been looking for. I keep buying speakers here and there and listening to them for awhile and then selling them because I am not satisfied yet. Edited May 2, 2021 by Rob 1
Rob 5,942 Posted May 2, 2021 Author Posted May 2, 2021 Spring semester and exams are over next week and I need to get rid of some amps and then the speaker search will be on again. I am very interested in those gargantuas speakers but I need to find them a little closer to Michigan. 1
Rob 5,942 Posted May 14, 2021 Author Posted May 14, 2021 I picked up a pair of SM 155’s and I am looking for a 15” woofer for these. Or a replacement voice coil. If anyone has any infinity parts for this model please PM me. 1

Hmmm.. well, with the number of speakers you've gone through looking for something with good sound, I was very surprised you would have considered these. They aren't talked about in the best of terms in the short amount of research I just did on them. If you've got money to spend, go ahead and replace the woofers, but obviously make sure you do it with the exact correct one with the right Thiel parameters. If not, I would just get rid of them and again, consider VMPS. LOL. Just saying 1
Rob 5,942 Posted May 14, 2021 Author Posted May 14, 2021 (edited) I know I am in a different direction. Lol but these were free. And I have heard mixed reviews on them. So I won’t spend a lot of money on them at all. Just wanted to hear them. And after listening to them I can always sell them. Edited May 14, 2021 by Rob 1
Rob 5,942 Posted May 14, 2021 Author Posted May 14, 2021 The VMPS’s are not in my budget so if I keep repairing speakers and selling them maybe I can afford them when I can find some here in Michigan. 1 1

Understood.. but, I'm not really sure what your budget is. Older legacy vmps's can be had for less than $1,000 a pair. 1

Rob 5,942 Posted July 25, 2021 Author Posted July 25, 2021 Took a little trip and grabbed some CV D9's to check out. Testing them out with a 900 in the garage for now. @gburke will be over to help move them in the basement and give the ole 4.0 MKII some exercise. 5 1

davidc 365 Posted July 25, 2021 Posted July 25, 2021 (edited) HI Rob, Can you clarify for me...I know you are searching for some good speakers, but within a budget. So, when you buy all these different speakers, do then sell them if you don't like them? What part of the country are you located in? https://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/ele/d/russellton-vmps-tower-speaker/7341284812.html Edited July 25, 2021 by davidc 1

davidc 365 Posted July 25, 2021 Posted July 25, 2021 To be perfectly honest with you....these speakers would be worth the 4-5 hr drive for you. I have them. They play very loud (up to 120db), they are very efficient (95-99db depending on version), very low distortion, very musical, can reproduce bass better than most any other speaker (down to 22Hz at 110db)....guarantee you would love them. You can search for old reviews of them and they are all great, even by the golden ears of mags such as Stereophile and Absolute Sound. 1
Rob 5,942 Posted July 28, 2021 Author Posted July 28, 2021 @davidc Thanks for the information and looking out for me. Pittsburg would be about a 10 hour round trip and the D-9's were a 2 hour round trip. I am keeping my eyes open because you have tweaked my curiosity. And I know if I don't like the D9's, I can turn them pretty quick like most CV's. The main thought while purchasing these was to have them to sell together with a receiver or amp and preamp. I have friends at work that are learning about Carver and the sound it produces so I need complete systems ready for that opportunity. In the meantime I am listening to everything I buy and deciding if a set of speakers are worth keeping. I am finding out that not many speakers can satisfy the ears when listening to many genre's of music. One of these days there may be a set of VMPS's in the house when I find them closer to home. Or if I can get a Suburban full of Carver gear along with them on a road trip. 1
Rob 5,942 Posted August 24, 2021 Author Posted August 24, 2021 Got my 901 EQ back this weekend from Greg and Jenny. Hooked everything up to a PM1.5 and they sound great. Thanks again you guys for all the great work you do for me. 3 2
