Kurt 3,110 Posted June 3, 2025 Posted June 3, 2025 Saw an old DeSoto pop up for sale recently in local paper..... Not really looking for an old car, but the ad caught my eye because the car actually had a record player in it. So, I had to google that...... Turns out Chysler actually offered an under dash record player system from about 1956-1961 on some cars. You could actually stack a bunch of 45's (like the multi-cd players that came decades later) and flip through them. I had no idea. Found this Youtube video on it and thought you all might get a chuckle. 2 5
Kurt 3,110 Posted June 3, 2025 Author Posted June 3, 2025 Apparently they had a couple different models.... Here's a 1956 version 4 4
stereo_dog 1,501 Posted June 3, 2025 Posted June 3, 2025 They were available as after-market, also. About $55.00 back in the day. You can still find them for sale. 6 1
Sk1Bum 12,414 Posted June 3, 2025 Posted June 3, 2025 My first job was in a full service gas station, and one of our customers had one of the big Chryslers with the factory turntable. I never heard it play, and I don't know if they ever used it. 5
Rob 6,212 Posted June 4, 2025 Posted June 4, 2025 While searching these players I came across this little gadget. 🤣 2 3

Was making $2.10/hour. I remember getting an in-car record player in the shop and thought how screwy is that? 4

One available on eBay now, - check out the key-lock to keep your record stack from getting stolen! And a NOS needle (cartridge?) that sells for as much as the for-restoration unit above: 1 2

4krow 7,165 Posted June 4, 2025 Posted June 4, 2025 You know, with the right headers, they get pretty decent bass. 7
Balok 1,705 Posted June 5, 2025 Posted June 5, 2025 They must have had smoother roads back in the '50s. 1 3
Receiver2000 4,367 Posted June 5, 2025 Posted June 5, 2025 Softer suspensions and no low profile tires. 2
Receiver2000 4,367 Posted June 5, 2025 Posted June 5, 2025 It would be worth it. But much worse than texting. 2
4krow 7,165 Posted June 6, 2025 Posted June 6, 2025 Rides were so smooth back then, that they used to cut diamonds in the back seat. I had an idea for a helicopter based TT but it never got off the ground. 4
