Welcome to the Carver site!!

I previously owned a IV.

Question, Is the unit still operational and not experiencing any problems, and you just want to get it refreshed due to age?

Or it is experiencing problems?

At one time I owned a IV and it gave me many years of GREAT pleasure. I had a recap done and the unit completely went dead after one year. Nothing related to the recap just the processor failure it was determined.

I really loved the unit but not enough to try fixing it again nor purchase another replacement.

I put that money into a new Marantz AV unit that had a 5 year warranty. Its not exactly the same, but I have improved several items around it that more than makes up for the loss of the Sunfire.

I also was able to incorporate all my older Carver equipment and add new modern day equipment so it was, for me, a big plus.

Sorry to hear about your luck! The TG-IV is an excellent processor, I have one myself along with a TG-III. Unfortunately they're getting a bit long in the tooth, not sure  I'd spend much time or money having one serviced as there's better more modern options out there. As @BobTFM35 pointed out in his post there are chips inside that can fail with no replacements available so depending on what's wrong with your unit it may not be serviceable anyway or last much longer even if it is.

If you're using it for 2 channel I'd recommend looking into a 10 Octave Pre here:

Welcome.

Aging AV receivers rapidly fall behind current developments in both receiver and recording technologies, like, say, Dolby Atmos, HDMI's recent ARC developments, etc.

I second @BobTFM35's recommendation - consider investing the money you could put into the aging Sunfire, with early-AV-era technology..., put that money toward a new Marantz - even one of the basic entry-level models like an NR1510 ($700 list), or a Cinema 70s ($1300 list), are going to outperform receivers that are aging and have older-designs.  You could put $400 - $600 into a repair/restoration..., depending on the effort (hours) required.  Typical electronic service costs per hour are in the $125-$175 per hour range - for good knowledgeable techs - which you would want.

I love Sunfire - so if your heart is there - go for it - but realize that new AV-technology-developments can never be back-integrated into aging receivers designed decades ago.
