chiroacademy 833 Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Has anyone tried using wood glue to clean your vinyl? Is it easy or a pain? Messy? Does it work? What glue do you use?
danowood 2,167 Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 that was discussed on one of the trends about 2 weeks ago. one Person brought it up, uses the techniques and swears by it. I'm contemplating doing it on an older lp that is pretty bad to just try it, but am and have been to busy of late to do it.
Retriever 1,127 Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 If you snif some types it sounds better ??? Never heard of this....
PDR 1,194 Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 If you snif some types it sounds better ??? Never heard of this.... Sniff enough glue I imagine everything sounds better.... I have to try this technique as well, same thing with an old LP, I have reservations, but remain open minded.
danowood 2,167 Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 It took me awhile to find it. It was recomended by herbies 101 here's the trend it's on page 4: http://thecarversite.com/yetanotherforum/default.aspx?g=posts&t=9283 2
Retriever 1,127 Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 The science sounds good but Id be scared to run a high dollar cartridge first test!
Gene C 1,748 Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 There shouldn't be any remnants from the glue left, comes off in one piece with the grease, lint and whatever else has been trapped in those grooves for years. Always a good idea to hit it with a vacuum or some cleaner when done too.
xavionics 2,069 Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 I've read about this and have seen pictures. I haven't tried it yet, but I know wood glue pulls everything out of my fingerprints if I remove it just before it's completely cured.
xavionics 2,069 Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Okay guys, I decided to do some experimenting... First, The Victim: Don't be disturbed, I have another copy A close-up: Nicely coated (I hope)... I'll be back shortly after it has dried some...
PDR 1,194 Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 ITS ONLY JUST BEGUUUNNN....... Sorry couldnt help myself.
xavionics 2,069 Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Good one! I'm not dead, er dry yet... Peeled the outer layer, still liquid underneath. still more time... 1
chiroacademy 833 Posted January 15, 2014 Author Posted January 15, 2014 Wow that's looks crazy. How often do you think you would do it or is this just for desperate cases.
Gene C 1,748 Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 You might want to let that cure for 18 to 20 hours.
xavionics 2,069 Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 My thought was to catch it before it's fully cured, while it's still flexible. I'm hoping to peel it off tonight but I'll probably have to leave it until morning. I tried to get the thin area removed after it dried but that wasn't going well. It will flake off of the lead-in area but kinda has a grip on the grooves. More to come tomorrow...
danowood 2,167 Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Herbie said ihe would leave it on seemed like 12 to 16 hours, that stuff appears pretty deep, I'm with Gene on this one
Retriever 1,127 Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Found a reviginizer for all I know it might say Elmer's under the label http://recordrevirginizer.com/faq.html
HappyTrails 498 Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 The video's I have seen on this the glue is THICK.
xavionics 2,069 Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Yep, seems thicker is better. Peeled off most of the thicker areas last night. They came off okay, of course it left the areas where the glue was thinner and more fully cured. Kinda made a mess of it. Reloaded again this morning. We'll see what we have this evening...
HappyTrails 498 Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Seems like the video also suggested a glue to use. Titebond maybe?
SteveFord 1,119 Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 This whole thing seems like much more trouble than it's worth. My RCM takes around a minute and a half from start to finish.
Herbies101 14 Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Been doing it on my wax for over a year. Titebond II is the glue to use. Like ive said in that other thread ive done some records 4 times and its AMAZING the difference on these records. Ill Plug that audiokarma thread again. http://audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=99837 and the first video I found he goes a little heavy on the glue but you get the idea. I use an old TT I got from a buddy and use a bondo spreader to spread the glue. Be careful of the air bubbles cause the air wont let the glue touch the vinyl. If you think it didn't help the 1st time just stick with it. Like I said ive done some 4 times. It wont save ALL of the junk records but I shop used in confidence at the thrift stores and such cause I know the glue at least will make it tolerable. Good luck! Happy Gluing & Turn it up! Bob 2
chiroacademy 833 Posted January 15, 2014 Author Posted January 15, 2014 "Herbies101" How often do you do this process to an album? What other cleaning methods do you use between glueing?
specd_out 17 Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 I have done this a few times. I do it on cheap lps from garage sales and the like. It works pretty well. never had an issue and the recored always sounded better. I used elmers white school glue.
Gene C 1,748 Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 This whole thing seems like much more trouble than it's worth. My RCM takes around a minute and a half from start to finish. True, My Sota takes about the same time. Not sure how much more the glue would pull compared to the cleaning machine?
