  1. It's probably a stretch to think any of the AL III owners here have also heard the Apogee Centaur Minor and could give us a comparison review. But anyone who has info or opinions is welcome to offer their two cents. I'm looking at a local pick up from the same seller on both pair. He also has a pair of Ohm Walsh I would love for $379. Any opinions on them? Dibbs!
  2. That's Lemmy the Limey Bastard and he's a Phukin' Rock Legend! He should have died from self abuse a decade ago!
  3. Those are some very interesting looking speakers. Does the rear lean and curve of the cabinet have any technical reason for sonic improvement or is it just a style thing?
  4. Welcome! Great screen name! I'm so happy to see another platter spinner join the ranks. In these days of instant on, it's good to find another old soul who understands the ritual of the LP.
  5. BTW - I have a '04 Lightning that makes right at 550 HP. It has surprised quite a few "fast car" owners over the years... It's a go fast for sure! What have you done to make it a quick stop? I'm not sure if any of this applies to the '04 Lightening , but after I bought my used '02 I began learning more about the truck's brakes and decided to do what some call the heavy duty "Expedition Upgrade". I chose Centric and bought new Posi-Quiet loaded calipers and also Centric hubs (Power-Slot) that had been Cryo-treated and are supposed to last longer. Having always been an overkill kinda guy, I thought why not go with new parts on all four? I got the same new calipers, pads and cryo-treated hubs for the rear too. The Expedition parts are bolt-on perfect fits for the F150, but they are much more hevay-duty (both rotors and calipers). Maybe not the stopping power of a 'Big Brake" mod, but pretty beefy and a very effective upgrade for much less money.
  6. Home renovation, Cool car fixin', Vintage Stereo and now computer stuff. I'm starting to get the feeling that you are quite the renaissance man and a chronic over achiever. Any other cool stuff, projects hobbies or skills we men would admire, but the wives or girlfriends would just not get? Renaissance
  7. A really nice looking project. I still like the spine out set up for now, although my eyes are going too so I may change my mind about that in the near future (when my drugstore magnifiers stop working). I have an idea to repurpose the big square hole in my Oak wall unit that used to hold a 32" tube TV. I want to build a shelf to have two rows of LP's (one above the other) with thin vertical separators every 6 or 8 inches to avoid extreme lean . I relocated the wall unit when I went with the BIG, flat screen LCD. Now the wall unit is shelving my Carver gear and a couple of turntables (one with MM, one with MC carts) so this will work to keep it all together with the LP library. I noticed your doesn't have wheels. Are you planning on adding those or will this be a permanent placement?
  8. You got me licked on the old truck front too.
  9. Thanks Z! A wealth of knowledge as always. I figured them for an obscure brand, but not THAT obscure and unusual.
  10. Is the VIN a big deal in CT when you build your own kit car ? BTW - I have a '04 Lightning that makes right at 550 HP. It has surprised quite a few "fast car" owners over the years... SA-Weeet!!! A true thoroughbred compared to my old workhorse XLT.
  11. Is this a funny hat ??? Yea buddy, that's what I'm talkin' about! Is that one of those distressed from the store models or did you administer all that well worn patina yourself?
  12. I have never heard of this brand, but they look like interesting vintage horn loaded blasters. If they don't work and need some attention to the crossovers and driver surrounds they would fit right into my collection of vintage speakers (in the obscure brand section). If you wind up with one or more pair, please keep us posted on your discoveries.
  13. Awesome system, major home improvement project, way cool garage and car toy...can I come live with you David?
  14. Welcome! What brought you to the CS site? Are you a long-time Carver fan or is it a more recent discovery? We love pictures of gear here so snap away and pony up!
  15. Welcome! Sorry to hear about the sad end to your beloved gear. Looking forward to hearing more from you here.
  16. What kind of tube buffer are you using (pictures)? Many of us here are interested in tube buffers and if you have a good one that's working well for you I'm sure that would be welcome info.
  17. Interesting use of a really nice preamp. Some here (including me) might claim using the venerated C-1 only as a phono stage to be sacrilege, but to each his own. Good luck with your project.
  18. I think you are absolutely correct about these being Sunfire knock-offs. It seems he used a pair for his model and is now selling them as well as the results and the bootleg with identical ad copy. Can you say copyright infringement? Now my question is about the integrated Sonic Hologram these speakers claim to offer. How would that interact with the sonic hologram generator in most of our preamps?
  19. Nice OCCD Score! I admire your dedication to the disease. On of my weaknesses is speakers, but to date I have not added any Carver speakers to my collection. I came close to a purchase myself this weekend. http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/ele/3126620770.html Still looking for a deal on some Amazings. But these almost got me. Hmmmm
  20. A little background just to fill you folks in on how I came by this collection of Grateful Dead tapes. With over 19 years with JVC selling boxes of consumer electronics to the military exchanges, I had collected one territory after another as the company shrank it's ales force. I soon had responsibility for most of the Western U.S., Alaska, Hawaii and Guam. Being into collecting vintage audio gear and other old and interesting stuff, I would visit pawn shops near the military bases I visited. G.I's as a group travled overseas and many bought some pretty neat high-end stuff. When money would get tight they would often pawn their gear for quick cash. In the early years (before internet and epray were popular) I came across some pretty good finds. If I couldn't carry it back I would ship it home to myself. Beacuse of Kraig's list and epray less and less good quality stuff could be found in the pawn shops so I started looking in local classifieds (and Kraigs list). I found a few good items that way and was able to bargain a good price on them most of the time. Then a girl in Seattle I would often spend time with when I was in that area turned me on to a new deal on the internet called Freecycle. She was a bit of an earth first greenie type and recycled everything she could So people sign up for Freecycle and use it to list stuff they want to get rid of instead of just tossing it. Then locals who also signed up could reply to the offer and pick up the item. She showed me the one she had signed up for and the stuff listed was mostley housewares and junk, but then I saw a Rega turntable listed.(with no belt or feet but hell, it was a Rega!) I was to late to claim it (first come first served) but it got me interested.. I started signing up for free cycle in most of the areas I frequently visited and while I was killing time in the hotel at night I would get on and see what was being offered. Most people list offers in the evening after dinner or at night before bedtime so that timing worked out for me. Over the years I was able to score a few sweet freebies. In the L.A. area the best area for me has been North Hollywood. I had already got a great deal on a nice pair of Blonde 2.5 Maggies from Kraig's list for $100 (they need at least one ribbon so that will be another $100). Then North Hollywood Freecycle got me a pair of Boston Aucoustics A100 that need to be refoamed, a nice full size vertical window air conditioner to fit my vertical slide windows and these tapes. I have also scored other less impressive speakers, computers, cameras, camcorders, turntables, reel to reel decks, cassette decks and receivers. If they work but I don't want to keep them, and no one I know wants them, I will give them to the Purple Heart Thrift Store to support veterans or Goodwill. Stuff that has issues that I don't want to deal with either go back on Freecycle here in San Diego as "for parts" and local fix-it dudes will usually snag em'. So my message is to get on Freecycle in your town, give stuff you don't want away for good karma and keep your eyes peeled for good stuff most folks don't even recognize as worth anything to snag yourself some good deals.
