Upgrade for carver tfm45?
BobTFM35 replied to Metal Head's topic in The Welcome Shop (Please read first)
Welcome to the Carver Site!! So glad to see another TFM user! Love them! I'm assuming that you are wanting to upgrade your TFM45? If so having Nelion @Nahash5150 do the up grade will give you many many rewards. First Excellent Workmanship, second a fantastic warranty, and third an appropriate 27% increase in power if you do the full "mkII" upgrade. For me that's piece of mind. -
McIntosh 240 chassis replacement
BobTFM35 replied to Nahash5150's topic in Nelion Audio's Vintage Audio Repair and Restore
Greg @Nahash5150 I don't know the back story on why this amp is on your bench. Lets say, its not a customer, but something that you sourced for your own use. If it was for a customer, I might have written the following differently. I did a little research on this amp and I've come to this conclusion. I just hope that I can explain it clearly. First the going price for this model, depending on the condition is maybe 3500 to 5000 (correct me if I'm wrong). That was the asking prices on ebay that I viewed. For discussion purposes lets say I can flip it for $4000.00 and I spend no more than 1200 for parts, don't know the bench time required so I can't factor that in, but it could still come out to be a nice profit. One of my first decisions is on availability of spare parts. You have a very nice Chrome chassis to work with. The vendor that I found for that chassis (and possibly the same one that the chassis was sourced from) also has some very nice reproduction pieces, such as the decals for the transformer covers and either a silver or gold badge 240 badge. For you sourcing the tube sockets, correct wire color and size would be no problem. The other sockets or holders for the metal caps (or whatever they are) I feel that you have the abilities to source them. The pots, depending on their condition, might take some reconditioning. Might need to see if replacements are available. I do know that for the dynaco amps there are a few vendors offering parts for restoration so maybe this is the case for the 240 amp. No doubt you have the wiring diagram for this unit so that would be a great source of encouragement to start with. I might start placing as much on the new chassis as possible such as the tube sockets, pots, and speaker terminal strips, some preliminary wiring with lengths long enough to be later adjusted, thus using the original chassis and schematic as a guide. I do know that you not only have the correct equipment but also the knowledge and experience to tackle this endeavor with a systematic approach, and that in Itself gives it a way better chance for success. Enough encouragement? You have this. -

Welcome to the Carver Site!! Sorry to hear about your original systems fate. An excellent start for your new system with two(2) Nelion restored amps!! I'm not sure I am able to give you any guidance on the preamp front. Choosing one of those units would be very difficult for me. I might be inclined to go after all three for a variety of different reasons and how I want to setup my system based on my existing gear. I've had two of the three in my system at one time and can go to my sons house to listen to them. If I had to choose just one based on what I have at the present moment, it would be a 4000 or a 4000t. I would be able to pair up my stand alone Carver DTL with one and the Phase Linear 1000 series 2 with the other. You said that you had a tape deck, cassette or R2R? Do you also have a TT? No matter what you purchase I'm sure that you will be happy.

Good to know about the magnet shift issue for these speakers. This looks like a fun project. Per Jeff's comments below, methods on the Polk forums look to be more correct, so I removed the video so as Not to be misleading.

Myself I'm a OPPO or Marantz person. If I had to replace my current player It sure would be a very hard decision, and I might just get both. The OPPO because it can play SACD's, they are still supported as @Sk1Bum mentioned, and other reasons, and then a new Marantz because it has a warranty and it will easily integrate into my new Marantz AV unit. I also like having the ability to introduce a separate DAC unit. This might give me the ability to upgrade the DAC with a newer unit in the future. Prior to the purchase would be a trip to my local store for an audition of the unit in question. A purchase for me might look like this, OPPO BDP-105D or other similar models or Marantz CD6007 Along with an separate DAC Maybe a Schitt Modi 5 Good luck on your search for a replacement!!

Hello and Welcome to the Carver site!! Nice piece of equipment and like the decent amount of power from the five channels. Also like that it has pre out to add external Carver (or other) amps. For a restoration/refresh two places come to mind; https://nelionaudio.com/ Located in the state of Michigan https://hitechaudioltd.com/pricing/ located in the state of Washington. -
The second half of that video link could not be embedded because youtu.be does not allow embedding of that video. This might work, https://youtu.be/Zpinp2-PEhU?si=HJM7ABRyJCN09Vta
