The pictures of that old Bridgeport take me back a long time. The vari drive I think they called it, when you turn the wheel, one pulley widens, and the belt goes deeper in the groove effectively decreasing its diameter while the other pulley does the opposite. Mine had quick change collets like the NC tape reader equipped models that were soon replaced by the fadal vmc.

The Carver challenge and damping Factor. I have a question. When Bob nulled his amp against the tube amp, did they wind up with the same damping Factor? Remember the null test was successful when the speaker didn't move and therefore cone control was not a factor. And another question, has anyone made a hybrid amp, ie solid state with output transformers or a tube amp with power transistors?

Here's a good article on the subject. https://audiouniversityonline.com/speaker-polarity/ When pro speakers changed to the quarter inch phone plug, you could no longer swap the polarity at that end of the cable. Doing so at the other end of the cable would render the shell of the phone plug hot. I have a pair of MR - 825's with phone plugs and I know if one gets pulled while the speaker is playing, it will short the amp on its way out of the hole. So that was just a bad idea all around and probably why they found something better.

So you merely put red to black and black to red on the older speakers if you want to use them with others. Now if you had to replace an individual driver it might get complicated not knowing how old it was and the 9-volt battery will wreck a tweeter I think, so you would have to test for phase some other way like maybe a microphone on your oscilloscope and compare to the other speaker or see if they cancel each other out. I have often wondered about this but apparently as long as they're all the same, that is all that matters. When a drummer stomps the bass pedal, the pressure wave is coming at you but how does he hear it sitting behind the drum?

I think you summed it up pretty well. From what I read there was no standard when JBL decided on this polarity and then when it was standardized, it went against him. Then they had to switch to avoid confusion. My subwoofers are that way and you can check with a 9-volt battery.

I'd love to hear/feel Charlie's ripol subs. Four 12-in drivers trumps my 2x15"s and would be equal in area to a 24-in driver.

Good morning, I hope LOL Did you, your amplifier, and your door all survive? I hear horns can get you in a lot of trouble up there LOL I was thinking I hope he doesn't play "country honk" by the stones...

Maybe they've been monitoring your posts LOL It looks like tonight's the night and one of them got cold feet. 🤣 Looks like you need more amplifiers and if your door gets kicked just start a GoFundMe and I'll drop the first hundred because I recommended the pro speakers after all.

Are you familiar with this company? https://www.audiograph.se Swedish company AudioGraph, the home of the PowerCube, continues to develop measurement tools for the audio industry. AudioGraph created the de-facto business standard 3-D measurement graphs – easy-to-read yet very powerful I'm surprised this wasn't done a long time ago.

https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/howard-stern-number-one-band-of-all-time/?amp I was afraid to click on this. Funny that I just ordered that CD on about the day this article came out LOL

It says it will ship almost anywhere in the world. I would just try and place the order. If there's a problem I'm sure he'll let you know by email.

That's an interesting tidbit, I was thinking of getting some brushed stainless outlet covers. The problem I have with an upside down outlet is that molded plugs with a right angle point the wire up instead of down and may fall out easier. I think what people here are referring to is the third pin on the IEC receptacle mounted on the amplifier. Apparently some are mounted up and some are mounted down and this would switch the polarity of the other two pins as presented to the person wiring the chassis. I've never seen one but from looking at the pictures I get the impression that a two prong IEC receptacle would be compatible with either a two or three conductor cord. Whereas the reverse would not be possible.

No doubt this type of boilerplate was just copy pasta from another owner's manual. It's very common to find errors in owner's manuals. After a few too many complaints I was rewarded with the final proofread of all the manuals at a company I worked for. As long as the amplifier doesn't fall in the bathtub (without a GFCI) I'm sure they are fine. The last time I checked there still hadn't been a safety notice/recall on the pinto or mustang fuel tank debacle. I'll be damned if I ever trust that company. Lucky dear old dad wasn't taken out by that thick film ignition module in his T-Bird.
