dazed_and_confused 194 Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 Yay, it's Friday You prolly already know about this, so consider it a reminder rather than a tip - The next time you sit down to listen to tunes, spin a couple tracks, stop, take out a screwdriver, allen key or whatever you need, then tighten down all the bolts holding your drivers and or baffle boards in place. Then listen again and tell me you don't hear anything different.... I've been using a pair of stand-mounts that I picked up used a few weeks ago. I thought they were ok, but they weren't really holding my attention like the big Carvers do. I was about to switch back in the Carvers when I remembered that I hadn't checked the driver bolts. Went round with a 5mm key and then a torqx on the tweeters....what a difference! Absolute night and day. Cheapest and best tweak I know. Try and do it every 6 months or so. Have a great weekend! 6
Community Admin AndrewJohn 10,496 Posted August 1, 2014 Community Admin Posted August 1, 2014 That is a great tip, and thanks for the reminder. I'm on that task for this weekend. Some other DIY tips I have found: On some of the really really old vintage speakers I have restored, I've even gone so far as to fill the screw holes with epoxy or even elmer's glue some other adhesive that gives the MDF more strength in the screw hole area. I let the glue soak in and dry overnight before putting the screw back in and tightening. Replacing the speaker seal gaskets (usually have to fabricate these) between the basket and the cabinet wood (not the cosmetic gray paper-board gaskets on top of the basket) also has a noticeable effect. 3
Bean 384 Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 Here is an even better one.... Before doing a long listening session grab those things called a Q-Tip... and use em. If your ears are all kinds of gunked up it can really detract from what you hear.... That and I find the more beers/shots/mixed drinks you drink the easier it is to listen to 96kbps MP3's 1
compwaco 1,129 Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 That and I find the more beers/shots/mixed drinks you drink the easier it is to listen to 96kbps MP3's I'm not sure there is enough alcohol in the world to make these listenable.
kve777 6,889 Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 Oh, Great! All the screws on my woofer broke tightening them, and it fell out. It landed on my foot, so I screamed. That scared the dog, so she bit me. I went to kick the dog, but my foot hurt from the woofer laning on it, so I fell down and hit my head. Now I'm in the Emergency Room, trying to explain to the doctor that I have a head injury, a broken foot and a dog bite from trying out a tip to make my sterteo sound better! They don't believe me. Thanks for the "tip".
