It's Infinity "6" Month, everyone loves good six

Ok I am running with the theme here. A friend at work had these in his garage and brought them to me as a gift at work.
They need some love as well. Overall they are in good shape. I need to learn how to do woofer surrounds myself. So here goes.

Are these the mids that you can heat up?
Also, how thick is this veneer?

Are these the mids that you can heat up?

Why would you want to do that?

Yes, sounds silly but I read somewhere that one of these dome mids gets brittle and a warming will make them supple again. ???? Hell I don't know, that's why I asked.

Are you a little teste? emwink.gif

Am I a witness? Yes, witness to a potential catastrophe or train wreck whatever you want to call it. happy0009.gif

The heat will make the domes age faster, so if they are already brittle...your going to fuck them up even more.

Use liquid silicone or vinyl conditioner, even heard of some people using automotive liquid wax.

I heated one of mine, but only because it was dented. Gene is right - avoid heating if possible. I used a thin coat of leather conditioner after I heated mine.

+1 for ROAD TRIP! 8 hour round trip drive for my first pair of Kappa 9s, and 10 hour round trip for the ALIIIs... WAY cheaper than shipping, and WAY safer:-)

Yes, I want to sand the tops. Some are too thin.

LOL... I've got you beat on this one Mark....

18+ hour roadtrip to pickup my RS-II's in Georgia...

And like your trip, totally worth it!

No to sanding with anything that resembles course grit.  You may have some luck steam ironing the veneer to remove, but hard to match the cabinet IMO when replacing.

You might try rubbing the finish  00 to 0000 steel wool then using a oil similar to Danish Oil  You'd either have to luck up and match the color or do the whole cab's

Not sure how well this might work on worn veneer such as that but I used  Howards  on all my Infinity's throughout the years and it keeps them looking new.   It might be that multiple rub downs with Howards will restore things?

Well Rat's all done with his, when are you going to be done with your speakers PMAT? How's it coming along?

Just starting Gene. I started sanding the top of one with 220 and the veneer is pretty thick. It went well. The other one has more top damage but I think I can take oak shavings from another piece of wood I have and fill the dents and gouges. I will determine that in the morning. I need to order the new surrounds. Are there quality differences between vendors?
Also, the factory installed one of the tweeters a little cock-eyed. Stuff like that drives me crazy so I may fill the holes and re-align. I'm going to refinish the surface, not recondition, I believe. The finish has yellowed. When I sanded the color looks better to me. The cabinets are well made in general. Judging from driver quality, crossover components and box construction, I'd say these were bargains when new. I know these were not top-of-the -line as RS 6's. I'm also on a nice fastener kick so I think I will replace all the driver screws as they all have a little rust.

Welcome to the forum PMAT! We do like pictures with work in progress projects! happy0009.gif

Check with Ratamahatta, I would go with the same vendor he bought from on his re-foam job.

Mine were worse than that you will do fine.  I got my foam from these guys, they have always taken care of me.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Speaker-Tek-Speaker-Foam-Woofer-Repair-Kit-for-Infinity-RS-6B-/150686600939?pt=US_Speaker_Parts_Components&hash=item23159f0eeb
There are some real junk surrounds out there, they are the cheapest ones on e-bay, and they use Elmer's glue. I got the veneers here http://www.ebay.com/itm/ONE-RED-OAK-Veneer-Sheet-12-x-12-1-20-OR-050-inch-40-years-old-NOS-/390948831526?  just in case you cant salvage yours. Another thought I had was just to cut this http://www.ebay.com/itm/360835410670?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
to the same shape of the top if I could not get the veneer to work.  With a little work I am sure they will turn out great.

Crapola, I thought a simple refoam would do. Noooooooo Waaaaaay.
I pulled the drivers out of the free(!) 6's and low and behold the woofers are different. One is way wimpy. One is pretty nice. The one on the left is half the weight and cheaply built.
20141011211945371.jpg So I find my 6B woofers and they are no clear, they are black. They are nicer like the one but smaller in diameter.
20141011212208977.jpg
so I investigated the crossovers and the 6 and 6b are different. OK, expected. The binding posts are clearly inferior on the 6b's

Dammmmit! Ok so I hit the net to find the proper driver and thats not so easy. Crappola!

Call Michael Marks. He's "Mr Infinity" - if he doesn't have any lying around, or know where to get them, you're probably going to have to just troll ebay for a while. You may consider "donor" speakers too - a set with trashed Polydomes and/or emits, and just harvest the drivers...

This is an ad for polydome repair, but it's got Michael's contact info...

Good luck!

Since they are not exactly what you want. Part them out in eBay and put the money towards some speakers you really want. Why restore speakers that don't suit you?
