loner_t 2,568 Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 PCB Layout for Review (thanks MBSkeam and Martin1970). The size of the board is based on Martin's measurements. PS: Per board cost is $68.
BillWojo 542 Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 Wow, that is to rich for my blood. 30 bucks for the set and I'd be in just to have a neater build, not that anyone would see it. I just ordered full size XLR sockets and right angle plugs this morning, Neutrik NC3FRX-B and NC3MD-LX-B. My plan is to put this on the back with the cable pointing down, I can snake the cable into what ever stand that I build. I wasn't thrilled with banana jacks and plugs hanging out the back several inches. Plus I really like the solid connection that a XLR connector makes. BillWojo
UncleMeat 1,173 Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 is that just single layer traces? What about DIY masking/etching a plated FRP board? I've never done it; but from what I gather it's not terribly difficult.
martin1970 361 Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 @Martin.. please validate... OK, I measured the hole spacing using the actual speaker housing mounting studs. It looks like 55mm high x 70mm wide for the hole center to center spacing. The plate comes out to be 70mm high x 95 point some fraction of a millimeter wide But there's at least a 5mm gap on either side of the plate. So you can fudge that either way to suit. The edge spacing appears to be symmetrical. Hope that helps. 1
oldtexasdog 2,458 Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 Before I punch a pair of holes in my stands I thought I would check. 13/32 Bit right?
martin1970 361 Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 Before I punch a pair of holes in my stands I thought I would check. 13/32 Bit right? Your stands didn't get drilled already? Either way, I have the dimensions somewhere, I'll update this post when I find them. Update: It's hard to read but it looks like ... 3/8" diameter holes first hole center 1 1/4" from the bottom and second hole centered 3/4 from the first. 1

I've never done it; but from what I gather it's not terribly difficult. The colors do not show, but it is a double layer PCB, with VIAs to allow all the components to be one side and the etching on the other side. I do not have any equipment/tools/chemicals to etch a PCB. I have seen the DIY with traces, for example - this tutorial.

I guess I better check cause on James's equipment needed list he had the 13/32?
martin1970 361 Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 3/8 = 12/32 = One 32nd less than 13/32 = One 64th difference on either side of the hole = A teeny tiny bit of wiggle room = Slightly less of a chance of screwing up the threads on the binding posts.
oldtexasdog 2,458 Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 Thanks. Went with the 13/32 as it was not as tight and easier to work with. The mini XLR hole in the bottom plate required a little enlargment also on both plates, but got it all together now and playing. Thanks again for the help, as I got it done I saw where I was trying to Overthink it! 1

chiroacademy 833 Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 I got my speakers yesterday, YEA!!! Assembly looks easy but are there instructions some where? I see the videos which are helpful but I thought there were some step by step instructions somewhere.

chiroacademy 833 Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 Everything in the build has gone perfectly. No issues at all until I tried to fit the small XLR into the bottom plate. Too big. Any suggestions?
kingman 662 Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 Everything in the build has gone perfectly. No issues at all until I tried to fit the small XLR into the bottom plate. Too big. Any suggestions? You have to worm it out or drill it to fit.
pindrop 330 Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 Everything in the build has gone perfectly. No issues at all until I tried to fit the small XLR into the bottom plate. Too big. Any suggestions? It doesn't fit in either plate? If you try to open it up larger with a round file or drill bit be very careful you don't go too big becase there is only that little tiny lip on the xlr to hold it in place. I would go round file because it's aluminum and files easy, you'll have to use it on the back side(inside) the stand speaker post holes also to smooth them out as well.
chiroacademy 833 Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 Thanks, I didn't want to screw something up by enlarging the hole w/o asking

We encounered this problem while at CF and Alex simply used a step bit and went to the next larger step.
BillWojo 542 Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 I love step drills but the next larger step may be way to big. It could be just burrs and paint on the inside of the hole. A small rat tail file is what I'd be looking for. I'm going the opposite direction, I need to fill the hole. BillWojo
pindrop 330 Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 When putting the xlr back together at the top of tthe speaker post, that little aluminun ring that has a solder tang on it, does that have to be on there or since you're not soldering something to it can you just leave it off?

The next step up was just right. I think filing would have been a really slow process. I guess it depends alot on the difference between steps on the partucular step bit. I would obviously suggest drilling a test hole and/or checking with calipers.
martin1970 361 Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 I enlarged one hole with the file included in a Swiss Army knife. While it didn't take very long, it did slip and mess up the finish on the bottom. Needle files would have been so much easier, had I thought to bring them. Alex loaned me a step bit which I used on the other hole and the size was perfect. It was similar to the one on the left in the pic below.

I left 'em off and found you don't need them. Now I'm just sitting enjoying a great sounding set of speakers!!
chiroacademy 833 Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 The file worked perfectly. It didn't take much effort and they fit snug.
