Rob 5,985 Posted May 30, 2020 Posted May 30, 2020 (edited) So a friend of mine that I have mentioned before has told me a few times he wants my V15E CV's and if I do sell them to him, what should I be replacing them with? Do I stay with CV's or go another route? I know there are tons of speakers out there but for my style of music which is pretty broad, I would like to stick around 1G for the price. Ideas guys! weitrhino 1,443 Posted May 31, 2020 Posted May 31, 2020 I'm not sure how someone can give a recommendation as to whether you go with Cerwin Vega again or try something else. It's really a personal preference, however I'd suggest listening to a broad range of speakers and pick something you like. Usually questions like this fill up with responses from people advocating for what they chose for themselves. You can get a lot of speaker for a grand. 1 1 1

I was hoping maybe to hear about some names I never heard before. Like a guy at work talked about some PSB's. So I looked them up. What do you listen with? 1

After first hearing a pair over 10 years ago I knew I had to have some and, after a reasonable wait, I located a set for sale about 3 hours from where I lived. They rode home in the back of my truck on a semi-inflated air mattress and have since survived two more moves. Edited May 31, 2020 by weitrhino 2 1
Rob 5,985 Posted May 31, 2020 Author Posted May 31, 2020 Thats great. An air mattress in the back of a truck. I am definitely gonna look those up because I have never heard of those either. 1 1

My listening room is my choice. She doesn't care. The PSB's I was looking at were a tall tower speaker with 2 6-inch woofers separately ported with a mid and a tweet. Black piano finish and really caught my attention. 1 1 1

Nice, well trained! lol How much power do you have? (what amp?) Do you use or want a sub? What do you like about your CV's? Do you plan to bi-amp? Edited May 31, 2020 by DrummerJuice 1
Rob 5,985 Posted May 31, 2020 Author Posted May 31, 2020 I just picked up 2 M200t's and bridged them to the Cerwin Vegas. That was such a change in power compared to what the MXR 150 was pushing that I was only at 1/2 volume or a little more and it was just to loud. Clean and clear sounding but too much for the room. I like the CV's because I can listen to any of my music and I am satisfied with what I get from what I am listening to. These were my first speakers I ever purchased and haven't really listened to other speakers. None of my friends have big stereo Equipment. And yes I will Bi-amp. No sub but maybe a center. 1

Ok, how far are you willing to drive? Speakers are a journey not a destination! 1 1
oldtexasdog 2,456 Posted May 31, 2020 Posted May 31, 2020 I had a budget just like yours and about 10 years ago spent 6 months auditioning speakers at stores and peoples houses that were on some of the forums I belonged to before I found a set I liked. Took a set of three CD's with some music I was very familiar with to all of them. Listened for width of sound stage, placement of instruments and vocals, details and decay of instruments ect. I even took my amp with me when I had it settled down to the last 4 or so. Thing is I found it's your ears and taste and what some think sounds great I did not even like and some others thought were not so good I found sounded very good. Ended up with a set of B&W 705's I still have. Built a set of the CF15 speakers that I also found that I liked with my turntable system when paired with a M500t MKII but now I have room for only one set so the CF15's and a set of floor tower Wharfdales are in storage and the B&W's do it all. Spend at least half of what your system is worth on speakers you like then quit chasing the equipment and just enjoy the music. 1 2
Rob 5,985 Posted May 31, 2020 Author Posted May 31, 2020 Great advice. Thank you for the ideas and I am sure I will have plenty of time to shop speakers. Get one of these M200t's upgraded and throw it in my backpack with some music and do a road trip.
DrummerJuice 1,287 Posted May 31, 2020 Posted May 31, 2020 Search no more! Just build a pair out of some old microwaves! https://hackaday.com/2020/05/30/microwave-for-a-stereo/ 4
kve777 6,888 Posted May 31, 2020 Posted May 31, 2020 Best bang for the buck- Tekton. The bigger the better. I have Pendragons. I'd like to have Double Impacts. Someday... 4 3
BarryG 2,853 Posted May 31, 2020 Posted May 31, 2020 (edited) Lots of Vintage options, if your looking for new, I would check into Tektons. I know Travis has a New pair of ELACs he likes! I’ve not heard the ELACs but have a few friends who like them! Tektons is where I would look first! @kve777 when lockdown is over, I need to hear your setup! @Rob if you go with amazing s, you will need more power than the m-200t. Dadvw 2,877 Posted May 31, 2020 Posted May 31, 2020 (edited) I like the Paradigm series 11 and series 9 models. I will admit I have not heard many brands of speakers, but they sound good. I use them with different Carver amps ( M1.5t, M400t cubes right now, M500t, M1.0t, and soon a pair of M200t) and my Yaqin MS-110B tube amp. They are 91db at 1 watt, handle 180/150watts. And they do pass the WAF.......grin Edited May 31, 2020 by Dadvw 1 2
BarryG 2,853 Posted May 31, 2020 Posted May 31, 2020 My take on WAF, trade the wife for ALS and be done with it! Lol 11
